Laptop won't boot HELP HELP

Hi Guys

Been a long time since i was on here last, please can you help.......

situation:

I have recently bought a Fujitsu Siemens amilo. Worked fine for a week.

I installed a music making programme off the internet (Magix music and video) - it worked then my computer switched its self off and rebooted - strange.

Laptop turns back on and works fine for an hour, I play a game I know works, half way through laptop turns its self off.

I switch it back on - it gets to the desktop screen and switches its self off.

I try and boot in safe mode - it gets to desktop screen switches its self off.

I try and boot from Boot CD - it gets to desktop screen and switches its self off.

I go to boot options using F8 - try to run windows from its last known good configuration - gets to desktop and switches its self off.

I insert recovery CD to do a fresh install of windows XP - it analyses my system, gives me the option to install a fresh version, hit enter - it swtiches its self off.

Im stumped I really am. I always thought that using the recovery CD would solve anything but the laptop will not stay on for me to use it.

Yes computer is plugged into mains and the plug is on!

I've exhausted my knowledge can any one help me work out whats wrong?

Info on running a diagnostic
Info on running in DOS mode

anything i have missed.

Please can anyone help im desperate.

Thankyou

  • I should mention i recently increased my virtual memory.

it was set at 768MB and changed it too:

    lower limit 1000mb
    upper limit 3000mb

i have no experiance of virtual memory could this have added to the problem?

    RAM = 512mb

i had this problem when i instaled a program that lets you run cds from the hard drive on my amd powered machine so i uninstalled it and it worked fine (i am using xp media center)

try uninistalling the program and try audacity
  • I would love to un-install the programme but windows will not stay on long enough for me to actually use the computer.

Did you computer keep shutting down?

if so how did you remove the programme?

it shut down after about 2mins- i was quick enough to remove it (via control panel) b4 it shut down
  • Ah Ok

i haven't even got 2 seconds before computer shuts down.
  • Try reseating the ram (take antistatic precautions - don't walk up and down the carpet with it in your hands), and take out any extra cards that may be installed,

if it still does it, try recovery console

Does it say windows is shutting down in 1 minute, or just turn off (I'm assuming the latter) - it does sound like a hardware issue if the windows CD can't reinstall.

Also try booting with the battery removed.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • thanks albetross always sound advice,

i will try what you've said. in the BIOS the RAM is detected - should i still re-position it.

how does taking the battery out help?

my plan so far was to create a boot cd.... boot into DOS run scandisk for errors, remove the suspected file that causing the problem and use

    C:\scanreg / restore

i've been told it brings up dates and then you pick a date when the system was working well. i.e. system restore.

have you heard of anyone doing htis before?
  • yes scanreg is like a system restore for the registry, but it only works on 98/ME, same with scandisk (now chkdsk).

    Presumably this is XP?

The battery and ram stuff may make no difference whatsoever, but you are running out of options, so something to try. (in other words, pull out every bit of hardware you can, to rule it out of the problem).

  • p.s.

it just shuts down, i have had a glimpse at several different error messages too but on for a second i think they said,

not enough memory to carry this out

    rundl/32 error

this programme could not be started

these messages didn't come at the same time but at various points i have tried to start the computer since it has been broken.
  • yea this is xp - !!!!!!

is there no other way of doing it.

also if it was a hardware problem BIOS would show it? and windows wouldn't appear at all?
