p.s. I used this site https://www.moveflat.com to find my last place - the search function is amazing and it seems to be a good way of accessing private landlords without the hassle of going through an agent (I've always had bad experiences). And the ads in Loot were always sharing with strange-strangers...

Also have a think about claiming back your bank charges if you have any: article here.

  • Just found myself shouting "well done!" very loudly in an empty house, with the dog looking at me funny!

Jo, you've done so well in the changes you've made so far. Best of luck with the Ebay and keep coming here for support and ideas - it's been a Godsend to me!:T
  • Flat - I have 6 months remaining on my contract so can't move yet, i will look into it and i'm sure there are cheaper places but i cant get one for 6 months, it was one of the cheapest we could get at the time within walking distance of work

Gym - again its a contract so i cant get out of it untill March, i will then loose it but having spoken to them they said i cant do anything untill then - they have put me on the cheapest package they do.

The join acocunt is what we pay our bills from - Flat mate is awear of the situation and is cool with it, its not exceeding its limit and its not abused - Nationwide want to reduce it to £500 as its not got an income

    Dam those contractural items!

actually regarding your gymn you can cancel the direct debit. yes they'll get cross with you but it looks as if you're only going to end up with the direct debit being rejected. i had this problem with LA fitness. altho, when i joined i specifically asked if i could cancel at anytime and was told i could. so 9 months in i cancelled. then they told me i had to pay the remaining months to them - i refused saying that i had specifically asked if i could cancel, and i needed to as i was moving to an area that didnt have an la fitness so it was a bit ridiculous making me pay. in the end they said i had to pay £200 as full and final settlement. ok so in the end i only saved £70 but £70 goes a long way when you're broke. not sure if anyone else has advice on this?

also, with your flat, does your contract have a clause that specifically states you cannot cancel within one year? i'd be surprised if it did as this is not a standard clause. if not, then you are perfectly entitled to give notice and leave after that period is up.

you really need to take a good hard look at your situation. i am struggling to live (with my husband) on approx £220 a week in london (ok that's for two of us) BUT that's after my travel has been taken into consideration.....

Wow, well done, and the renting the car to your dad idea is genious! So impressed and I bet now that you've started you'll become as madly obsessed as the rest of us and be slashing those debts in now time. With regard to the gym, keep pushing, why not phone the head office now and speak to them, they've said no once probably in the hope that you'll just stay, but keep trying and they'll get the idea. You have made some major decisions and are taking all the right steps, I am sure you will continue this way, and just remember every penny makes a difference.

  • Thanks guys – I feel so much better just to have sorted some of it out!
That's really harsh about the gym I think. Is it worth writing a complaint letter to the head office that it's pretty immoral not to let people cancel their gym contracts if they're in serious financial trouble? At least they'll know how unhappy you are.

That’s just what I have done – I do use it all the time tho but I’m sure I can find a cheaper one to visit on a pay as you go tariff!
Also have a think about claiming back your bank charges if you have any

Oh yesh! – I’m hooked to the CAG forum and have started with Capital One and have 5 others in the pipe line (need money from the first claim to afford the others lol)

I cant believe you struggle on £110 each per week – that’s metal what do you do lol…I know its expensive to live here but I find unless you go to the suave bars then you don’t have to pay £5 a pint…even if you did £110 would get you 22 lol, sorry I don’t mean anything by it and I know there is more to life that beer, just hard when you’ve been living off £10 a week to hear u have another £400 a month and struggle

lol - it's fine. we were in a much more secure financial position before i got ill and i had the philosophy 'work hard / play hard' - we used to go to the clubs a lot as i was also working as a dancer - drinks there are not cheap! plus, i have or rather had expensive tastes ;)

also some of the money goes on food, trying to bring lunches fm home but sometimes we run out of stuff and lunch in the city is expensive! also, both my OH and my family live a long way away so anytime we want to see them it costs a lot to travel there (usually between £20-50 each).

i dont know - it just goes. we have one crazy weekend and then that's it for the month.

  • Move to the sunny midlands! It's great up here :)

You are doing really well so far. How much do you spend on food? Just wondered if you'd checked out the Old Style forum for ways to cut down?
Was debt free... then went travelling!
  • I am sure that we could give some work related examples

Like you have got to do the groundworks before you can build etc

Keep going and remember to close the various accounts and cards as you clear them
