Baking theme hamper - Christmas pressie

Really really sorry if this is the wrong place, I tried searching but couldnt find anything so thought I'd start this off.

I'm going to do a baking themed hamper for my MIL for Christmas. She's not much of a baker these days but used to be so I thought it'd be nice.

Am thinking:
a cake storage tin to put all the items in
a cookie cutter
baking cook book
pastry brush
bun cases
cake tester (to see if its cooked through)

What do you think? Any other ideas of things I could put in?
Is it even a good idea or might she think I'm being funny?? (you know how MILs can be... ;))

    I've been Money Tipped!
    how about apron and ovenmitt?
dont know if she has an electric whisk? mine was only £4.18 and its really good for the price
you could stick some ingrediants in such as flour, icing sugar etc etc

maybe a folder with some recipes printed out/collected in plastic sheets and pop some extra sheets in for her to pop her own in.

  • Have a look in pound shop or equivalent. Recently they have had some silicon cake tins and re-usual cupcake things. Failing that try B&M. Consider add cake decorations / posh sprinkly things as cupcake are very "in" at the moment. If you could find a cheap cake stand even better. Aim for that retro 50's chic :-)

  • I think it's a lovely idea

    Nice mixing bowl
    Measuring spoons
    Measuring cups
    Silicon spatula
    Cake tin liners
    Edible glitter or sprinkles
    Paste colours
Good quality vanilla extract or vanilla seeds
  • i see wombat has suggested good quality vanilla extract
that would have been my suggestion
    but make it yourself
excellent quality and so much more cost effective

i started mine on the 2nd of july
so it is ready anytime now

i was given a link to a supplier of excellent quality of vanilla pods (someone on here used them)
    they are fabulous big pods

What about various cake toppings? Hundreds and thousands, edible glitter etc etc

Also a piping bag for icing?

There are some great cupcake recipe books on amazon

Also I noticed in our local B&M bargains they had a lovely cupcake stand for around £5. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ciroa-Miniamo-Cupcake-Stand-Cakes/dp/B001CB5ZY2

You could put all of the bits in a big mixing bowl or cake tin and wrap it pretty with cellophane and a bow. :j
  • Those are some fab ideas! Thanks everyone :)
I may need to re think putting it all in a cake tin though, not sure it'll all fit! x
  • what about putting it all on a pretty tray?

I would love that as a present!

You could always find recipes online and print them out and laminate, would save some £ on not buying a book? http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/ has loads of fab recipes ;-)

If you're going to pop everything into the cake tin you could leave the lid off and prop it at the back and wrap in cellophane with a pretty bow.

I did some themed foodie presents 2 Xmas ago - chocolate lover, chinese, tea and coffee...

Cheap good quality baking stuff in home sense/TK maxx.
If she used to be into baking she probs has most of the above. Maybe some extra's that she'd love but not be able to get.

I can't justify affording nice decorating items such as edible glitter just for a hobby. They sell all sorts on ebay.

Another vote here for edible glitter and paste colours. I seem to be collecting them one or two at a time and they do last for ages. Also paper cupcake cases, as you can get them in really nice patterns now.
I suggest this book http://www.amazon.co.uk/Eat-Me-Stupendous-Self-raising-According/dp/0091925118/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1281274416&sr=1-1 Some of the methods and ingredients are unusual, so hopefully it won't be covering things/recipes she already knows.
    Hope that helps :)
