How to put clingfilm on windows

Hi all,

I gather from brief reading of drafts in windows that it is possible to put clingfilm on windows to reduce the draft.

How do I go about it, and does it leave a good finish, or does it look bad? I am thinking of putting it downstairs, and the room looks out over the garden, so I would prefer the best finish possible.

Thanks

I have not used clingfilm but the proper stuff. I put it on frame to fit in the window so it did not wreck the paint work.

It is not really hard but it is not easy but do take your time.

  • Yeah - my mum and dad used to use this before they gotroper dg. It comes in kit and you stick it all around then use a hairdyer to get it to shrink to fit, I think.

  • Thanks for your replies.

When the product is shrink wrapped to the window, does it look clearly transparent as class or is there a bubbling affect?

You can use ordinary cling film though I suppose the stuff you can get from DIY stores would be thicker. You stretch the clingfilm across the frame and heat it with a hairdryer to shrink it which stretches it taught. If you have plastic window frames it should cling by itself if you wash them with soapy water first and wait til they're dry. You don't stick the plastic to the window itself, you use it to create an enclosed gap between the film and the glass like double glazing.
  • i put it on one window last week..... i think i need more practice (or smaller windows to start with!) because even with the hairdrying, it still looks a bit funny - it's just not evenly shrunk (if that makes sense!). i think a second pair of hands would have helped sticking the plastic stuff to the window so that it all line up. it doesn't look terrible, but i think i can do a better job of it!
