How do you make a home made kitchen cleaner?

Options
Hiya

I'm trying desperately to cut down as I've recently been made redundant. One thing is to try and stop buying all these cleaners for the kitchen and bathroom as they are so expensive. I use lemons to clean the shower door which are extremely effective! However, what I want to know is how to make a general, all purpose cleaner for my worktops using natural, cheap ingredients. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks
Alassa

  • Save the spray bottles from all your expensive cleaning products, buy a bottle of Stardrops (about 54p), put a good squirt in each spray bottle, (I use about a tablespoon but this is more than it says on the bottle) and fill it up with water. I don't know about 'natural' but it's certainly cheap. There are lots of threads on this forum about Stardrops, and it really is good. You can use it just about anywhere - just spray and wipe off with a damp cloth.

 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast
  • Where do you buy `stardrop`?
  • I use the spray bottles with white vinegar and water - best ever cleaner - my taps and sink, toilet, baths now sparkle. I use it on my worktops - everything.

Have a look at the big Stardrops thread (http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=172073), where there are lots of details of suppliers, and suppliers of microfibre cloths. Seems to depend where you are in the country, but most supermarkets seem to stock it (usually hidden away on the bottom shelf) as well as Wilkinson's, Superbuys, and various pound shops.

Along with all the rest, I think it's great, but if you want a very natural cleaner, Anthea Turner had a recipe for a cleaner made from borax and vinegar. Can't quite remember it - I vaguely think it was 2tsp borax, 2tbsp vinegar and 2 cups water, but I'm sure someone else will be long to confirm or deny.

My kitchen cleaner is a squirt of stardrops and about two table spoons of zoflora approx, (really concentrated disinfectant from Wilkinsons in a glass bottle and box 50p at most) in a squirty bottle and topped up with water.

I'm happy with this and used to use dettox everywhere before seeing the light :D

There's also a floral disinfectant in the Stardrops range called Startips - bright pink liquid, smells quite nice.

I use washing up liquid for most things.

I use it neat of heavy cooker/counter top stains

Diluted with hot water for large area cleaning, floors and glass/windows (buff with newspaper)

For the kitchen and bathrooms and toilets I add a dash of bleach to kill germs.

Neat scrunged into collers and cuffs it helps loosen dirt before washing.

It can also be used for washing up so I'm told LOL

If I'm feeling posh I use stardrops cos I like the smell. LOL

  • I use some ordinary brown malt vinegar diluted with water in a spray bottle, with a squeeze of grapefruit shower gel that I wanted to use up (you could use washing up liquid - I just like a bit of foam when I clean and it doesn't smell so vinegary :) ). I use it to clean the kitchen and it also doubles as an air freshener.

When I clean the cooker top, I shake some neat vinegar on and then sprinkle salt onto it. The salt scrubs away any burnt on stains and then "melts", so you don't have the residue that commercial cleaners leave.
  • Not very natural, but I use a good half inch of Tesco Value thick bleach, topped up with water and some tea tree or lavender oil in a spray bottle for wiping down things like chopping boards and worktops. Careful you don't get it on your clothes though:rolleyes:
