Do you find that hairdressers always cut off more than you want them to?

In the past I used to go to Toni & Guy Academy for a £5 haircut and I have booked a session for Wednesday.
(Phone for the London Branch 020 7836 0606 in case anyone is interested!)

I haven't had a haircut in 2 years and I really love having hair halfway down my back - I'm really worried that they will cut off too much hair! I know it's a training academy but how much length do you think I will be able to keep? I would like some layers put in.

Do people generally find that hairdressers cut off more hair then you want then to? Do you tend to request less off on purpose to avoid them cutting too much?

I usually have a persuade a new hairdresser to take as much off my 'fringe' as I like, it's not so much a fringe as a spikey bit where a fringe would be, and some hairdressers don't like it!

My current hairdresser takes the clippers to it! Brilliant!

    I've been Money Tipped!
I am putting off going to the hairdressers as I've just grown my hair after having two inches hacked off in May when I only wanted the ends taking off. I know I will need a trim sometime but I am going to wait till its grown a bit more and then insist on them just taking the very ends off and I shall watch them like a hawk.

I used to have a hairdresser that did my hair just the way I wanted it and I never feared going to her but since she packed up my hair has never been the same - and its got shorter.

Be insistent that you just want a trim, its your hair and you who has to grow it after the hairdresser has got scissor happy, she doesn't have to live with it afterwards.
  • Can't speak for others, but in my experience, hairdressers have always cut off more than I've asked for. I don't think I've seen a hairdresser yet that has cut my hair how I've asked & I've seen a lot of hairdressers over the years.

I think the way forward is too keep focussed on what they are doing and try and avoid idle conversation.

I ask them how much they want to cut off first. I find this helps avoid misunderstandings! (I have long hair too.)

I've never given it much thought. Im not a huge fan of a hairdresser anyway, when i say i want something different i come out looking much the same.

I never really understand the "thing" people have with cutting their hair off...i suppose it must be a security thing for a lot of people. I take the !!!!!! it, hair grows approach.

Mine doesn't, although in the past I've had ones that go a bit mad with the scissors. It doesn't bother me though, I get used to new things easily.
  • Tigersilly---I really think you need to go in there armed with a photo of the layers you want. They cut off about an inch or so to get a good line in the hair. You might think it looks ok, but its a different story once it's wet, brushed out and from behind. To get layers you will have a lose a bit, but if you really want to keep most of the length as for face-framing graduated layers, these will be blended in. If you want it more obvious there are layers as for choppy ones. If you type these terms into google you will find some very nice photo to show your hairdresser.

It IS only hair Vixarooni, but it's MY hair! LoL.

I always find my hair is just where I want it right before I need a trim. Speaking of which I think I'm about due!
