The sun is shining in the sky, there ain't a cloud in the sky, it's stopped raining......I can't get Mr Blue Sky out of my head at the moment.
Erme - well done for experimenting with recipes, food is so much nicer when you take time and put effort into preparing it. If you can find a copy of Jamie Oliver's Ministry of Food cookbook, there are some very nice recipes with step by step instructions for those who are not used to cooking.
A cautionary tale for you all.....last week I got a letter asking me to take my car into the local dealer for a check as a fault had been found with some cars. I did just that on Tuesday.
While they were at it they "kindly" gave my car one of their "free health checks" ....and came up with the following:
all four brakes require new pads and discs. Problem with steering. Problem with suspension. Coil spring gone. Total cost - around £920.
:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:
Today I took it to my usual bloke in the next village, who checked it out. Result - nothing wrong with any of the brakes. Nothing wrong with the steering. Yes, new part needed for suspension problem, cost £35 as opposed to the dealer's quoted £96. Yes, new coil spring needed, cost £80 as opposed to the dealer's quoted £88.
:T:D:T:D:T
Consequently I have booked it in with him for week after next when we are back from hols - £135 as opposed to £920.:money:One life - your life - live it!0 -

Hi all, Hi Nargle. Glad you got a second opinion. Main dealers work to exacting standards:D They will tell you manufacturers guidelines say change it, when in reality it has 20K + miles of useful life left. Also things like brake parts and springs are manufactured in little companies all over the midlands for the major car companies. They also sell exactly the same part direct through motor factors. Example a Range Rover fuel pump, Main dealer £300.00 Independent dealer £95.00 Made in the same factory, same part number. The only difference one is in a plain box and the other has a Land Rover badge.
Look out for Tyre and Brake firms like Quick fit. A few years ago they made all the staff redundant, then set them back on a self employed basis, in other words they work under the firms umbrella, but anything they make after rent and parts is their own. Many of the fitters will add as much to the cost as they think they can get away with, especially where the female of the species is concerned.
I'm not a trained mechanic, but all my old school mate were. I learned from my father who was a Mechanical fitter, and I used to Rally and restore old Landrovers.
Sorry for the Speal, well done for not being ripped off.

Cheers, handy! A few years ago (I hadn't long had this car) I took the car into those same dealers because rather than have a full service (my car requires full service every 2 years not every year) I decided to take advantage of a discounted price "winter health check". While they were at it they told me my back discs and front pads (or vice versa) needed renewing as they were corroded. I took it to the garage I usually used at that time. Their chap showed me the half ton of muck he cleaned out of the brakes - no corrosion at all. So I was cynical when I got this health check summary from them this time! Total scheissters!One life - your life - live it!0
