Help - what to do next

Hi - I hope someone can give advice.

I have been trying to sort out my debts for a few months now. I was spiralling with Wonga - but managed to agree a three month payment so that is being settled. I have been basically choosing the loans or credit cards I can pay one month and deferring anything that is not as important.

My husband also has debt - however I pay all the bills and the mortgage goes out of his account. Everytime I feel I am getting on top of everything I find the mortgage has bounced and I have to put all my money into making sure that is paid over everything.

I am not sure where to turn - I spoke to a debt management team but won't go with them as I have seen that there are better ways out there I just need advice on what to do next.

If I can't make payments on credit cards what should I do - is it better to wait for letters or call the, - when I call them to say I can't pay they just make me agree a date next month but that means I fall in the same trouble again and again.

I have looked at my figures and think I will be ok in three months but if I can't make the minimum till then the interest builds up! help!

  • Hi, sounds like the approach of your OH paying the mortgage is bouncing, which means there's more going out of his account than going in. Time for you two to start tackling this together me thinks.

    1) would you consider a joint account with all the salaries going in and all the bills going out. You don't want the mortgage to bounce from his account when there was enough in yours to cover it.

    2) Do you know why its bouncing. I think you need to have a good chat and draw up an SOA together. Maybe he's making payments or got debts you don't know about that's causing the mortgage to bounce

    3) Once you've had your heart to heart, both agreed to tackle your debts and done your SOA post it up here (you'll find the SOA in the stickies at the top it's basically summary of what comes in and out of your finances and how much you own/owe)

    4) we'll come up with lots of lovely ideas about how you can pay your debt off faster, which debt to tackle first etc. BUT the SOA has to be accurate for our advice to work and I think you really do need to start tackling this together.

So welcome, good luck and keep smiling

    Hi jbwonder,

Post your statement of affairs and you'll get loads of advice. The sooner you do this the better.
If you've nothing decent to say, perhaps you shouldn't say anything.
