If you are not a member its worth joining if you manage to get 2 nights - I am sure you can do it over the phone, just tell them you are in the process of joining.
This will probally be dorm style accomadation but some dorms only have 4 beds in them so if you are going with your mates or family you might have a room to yourselves. They are all quite close together so in theory you could get a night in one and then try the 2nd night at another and a 3rd at another.
Some are quite close to rail stations - usuful if you have discount rail cards. Arnisde has and you get to it via Preston. We stayed there one August, very pretty old fashioned sea side village, loads of nice walks along the Morecambe sands.
Windermere also has a station - I think you go through Manchester so its ideal for anyone doing an escape the city weekend. Not sure of this but there used to be a YHA bus that did a tour of the lake District hostels, it started at Windermere station went up Windermere and then onto Ambleside and onwards - you would need to check this out. Windermere is gorgeous, lovely grounds and a view over the lake as well.
Excellent oppurtunity to try hostelling if you have never done it before or not done it for years. Hostels now do fab meals if you dont fancy doing your own meals or walking to the nearest pub. But if cash is tight and you self cater you can have a very cheap weekend

Thats a great deal for people isnt it. It might be worth you reposting this over in the UK holiday forum as people are always looking for cheap breaks away.
