Kitchen for now or future?

Hi, I know there are forums for DIY and such but I am "Old style" as is my house, I wanted to ask old stylers a question.

I am getting a new kitchen and I don't like dishwashers.

We are big on recycling water and I use my old washing up water to flush the toilet ( can't do that with a DW)

I will be getting a 2 and half sink with spray tap ( my dream set up LOL)

However, we may well move from this house in about 10 to 15 years ( retirement)so the question is:

Do I have the kitchen done to my taste and disregard the fact that future buyers may be put off because there is NO DISHWASHER?
or do I compromise and have a slimline one put in ( but maybe not plumbed in) and hedge my bets? ( thought if I went down this route could l use it to just store plates?) Problem is space is an issue as I need more storage than I have now.

FWIW We live in a small bungalow.

Opinions please?

TIA

  • Hi there
If I was you I would do it for you as your ideas aren't "out there" that no one else would like them. Simply because there is no DW in would not put a buyer off buying your house in 10/15 years time just as it wouldn't clinch the deal either IMO.
Who knows what tomorrow brings so live for now as you don't know what's round the corner. Fair enough if you were doing it so far fetched that it would put people off (but even then, why live 10/15 years for others' likes?).
Enjoy your new kitchen - I have had mine 1 year in August and I LOVE it - I got the oven I've always wanted, well the next best thing anyway - as we couldn't afford an AGA LOL and I would not turn back. I also chose to have all gas which again a lot of people I spoke to wouldn't choose but hey ho - my house, my way :-)

In 10 or 15 years time the prospective buyer may rip out the kitchen anyway as it would be old then.

I would go with storage space over a dish washer any day. There seems little point in getting one now as in 10-15 years it may be obsolete.

If you are getting the kitchen designed would it be worth having a word with the planner? There might be some sort of compromise such as putting in an electrical point and leaving room for the plumbing. I've no idea if you can or not but it would be worth asking if they can design it so a dishwasher could be slotted in later.
  • As long as there is space to put one it shouldn't be a problem. I like them, and if I was buying a house I would be happy to take out a cupboard and install one myself. Also, in 10-15 years there may be much more efficient/different dishwashers available.

Disreagrding the fact that you CAN collect grey water from a DW for other purposes and that overall a dw is far more water efficient than washing by hand, if I was buying a house with a 15 yr old kitchen it would probably be at the top of my things to redo list anyways so have what you want rather than worrying about the future.

Have the kitchen you want. Not having a DW wouldn't put me off buying a house at any rate and as all the others have said it will probably be considered old fashioned or out of date by the time you sell.

I dont have central heating but my house isnt cold. The point is this is your HOME, live in it and dont worry about making money. Do it to your tastes and enjoy it. 10 years is a long time!

It's your home, so do what you like! However, I very much doubt you are able to wash up with less water than a dishwasher -especially if you're going for a spray tap that will get water everywhere. If you're interested in the environmental impact of a kitchen, then a dishwasher would be one of the first things to put in - in addition to being extremely frugal with water, it also only heats exactly the water it needs to, so no wasted energy when you wait for hot water to arrive.

I only wash up once a day, there are just two of us and I use EVERY drop of water in the Kitchen, so just two bowl fulls, that go down the toilet~ saved in a bucket until needed;)

I already have a spray tap add on and I am very careful not to get it all over.

The reason I don't want to use a dishwasher is :

you have to buy one ~ sink already there
It needs electric ~ My hands are self powered :)
It needs dishwasher detergent/rinse aid/stuff to clean the machine etc.
I know on here people advocate that they use vinegar and other old style stuff, but there is still no getting away from the fact that it uses electric.
My hot water comes through a very fast boiler just a few feet from the sink, so barely any waiting time for hot water.
I also know that there ARE ways of harnessing "grey water" from a dishwasher, but our house is not laid out in such a way that it would be practical to do that without great expense.

I appreciate your input and I think I am going to just go with my 2 and a half sinks and see if the planner thinks it is do-able to put in an electric point or whatever is needed for future use, as long as it isn't too expensive to do I might consider that a good compromise :)
  • I bought my house with a complete kitchen. I had one small cupboard removed to fit my slimline dishwasher. We drilled two small holes in the adjoining cupboard (larder cupboard in order to plug it in. All camoflaged neat and tidy and an easy fix to accommodate my wants.
