student overdraft

I am a 22 year old full time student and i'm around £9k in debt with credit cards etc. this debt was all aquired when i was 18, had a well paid job, and was very silly.
I am about to go into my second year of uni.
in my first year, i applied for an abbey student account, not overdraft, just the account as they credit it with £50 once its been open so many months. I had only had my basic abbey account for about a month, so not much money had gone in, and my debts were still all over the place. Obviously i got declined. Last academic year i really struggled as i would work almost full time as well as trying to study and that affected my grades. i dont get very much in the way of grants as its based on my parents income, and they dont help towards my rent or fees or anything. i was given a grant from the hardship bursury which helped, but i still needed to work around 25 hours a week to cover rent bills and my payment towards my debt.
now its a year on and i go back to uni in september. i have worked all summer full time, so alot of money has gone into my abbey account, and i have only gone overdrawn on it once an that was by about £2. I have been making regular payments to my creditors via a debt managment plan and not missed one for a year. also due to claiming back charges etc in total my debt has reduced by £3k since last year when i applied.
as second year is alot more important than 1st year and it counts towards my final grade, i really dont want to kill myself working and studying so i am considering trying for an overdraft with abbey. my situation is totally different to last year, and i would say around £14-15k has gone into my bank in a year with student loans and my wages. My credit file also looks alot tidier, no credit searches in the last six months, no missed payments, and only one account showing as overdue but this should be sorted in the next few weeks. however i do still have defaults on there. last time when they declined me i was able to have them write off to an underwriter explaining my situation in the hope that it wouldnt be based purely on a number that experian comes up with. but they still said no.
does anyone have any experience on this, or think that maybe they would allow it now?
i am not looking for more credit at all, so please dont reply if you're just going be rude and tell me i'm looking for more credit. i am not that stupid anymore, i just want to make the most of my time in uni as i am paying to be there, and i want to do the best i can. i also know that next summer i would be able to top the overdraft back up if it was granted, as i am more than happy to work 50 hours a week in the summer once my uni work is done.
any advice greatly appreciated
