Advice re Scotcall please

Please dont Judge me but i am looking for some advice Re Scotcall please.
I had 2 Men come to my House yesterday saying they were from Scotcall re a Debt they say I have with Orange that was taken out last year(2009) and they want me to pay £949.
So they didnt come into my house as i was outside at the time and they showed me this little sheet of paper which had my Name and Address and date of birth and how much i they say i have to pay orange.
I asked to see the Contract that they say i signed and they said they couldnt as didnt have it so they made a call to there office who told them to pass it back onto Orange to see if they can get hold of the contract that i wanted to see to prove that i had signed one cause i have not signed a contract with orange but i am with orange now that the contract was taken out this year not in 2009 and as i say im still with.
What is the best way to go about this because unless they can prove with a signed contract i am not going to deal with them and what is the rules about them talking to me at the front of my house where other people could hear if anyone was about?
Also why send 2 men round? is that to try to scare me? if so it didnt work!!!!
So as i say please dont judge me and if i can have some advice that would be great.

Hi
It is about trying to scare you, or to make you think they were baliffs. They weren't and they have no rights to enter your property or anything. There is a letter you can send to stop them coming again. Threat of Doorstep-Visit
Do you agree that you have a debt with orange? Have you been recieving letters from orange or anyone regarding the debt?A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
If they come back tell them to go away or you will call the olice doorstep collectors have absolutely no rights to be on your property whatsoever0

Hi Rich Shot!
My friend has had a similar problem too! ScotCall have been in touch saying that she owes Orange over £1,000 on a contract from 2007 (she is with Orange, but this is not her contract and she pays her bills, albeit late some months).
The advice we were given was to send a 'prove it' letter:
Dear Sirs,
Account No: XXXXXXXX
You have contacted me regarding the account with the above reference number, which you claim is owed by myself. I would point out that I have no knowledge of any such debt being owed to (insert company name). I am familiar with the CPUTR 2008 and the Office of Fair Trading's Guidance on debt collection, which states that it is unfair to send demands for payment to an individual when it is uncertain that they are the debtor in question.
I would also point out that the OFT say under the Guidance that it is unfair to pursue third parties for payment when they are not liable and in not ceasing collection activity whilst investigating a reasonably queried or disputed debt you are using deceptive and unfair methods. Furthermore ignoring and disregarding claims that debts have been settled or are disputed and continuing to make unjustified demands for payment amounts to physical & psychological harassment.
I would ask that no further contact be made concerning the above account unless you can provide evidence as to my liability for the debt in question and await your written confirmation that this matter is now closed. Otherwise I will have no option but to make a complaint to Trading Standards and also inform the Office Of Fair Trading of your actions.
I look forward to your reply.
Yours faithfully

Send all letters recorded signed for, keep a copy of the letter and post office printed receipt together to prove you've been in touch. Do not call them - you really need a paper record of what's been said etc.
My firends 'debt' has now been passed back to Orange since sending the letter (woohoo!). We're waiting to hear what Orange say now - they have also registered a default against my friend in 2009, I do wonder what on earth they are playing at?! If anything else occurs, please come back for further advice! As Tixy said, ScotCall aren't bailiffs and have no right of entry etc. In fact, there's a letter to let them know they're trespassing if they turn up at your property again - will post it up if you need it?
Don't back down, they obviously have nothing to hold over you!I've got nothing else but I've got my family.

They do not need a signed agreement with Orange to prove the debt.
Mobile phone companies do alot of delaing on the internet/telephone, and as such, you may well have signed nothing anyway.0
