M and S 3 for 2 offer

M and S have an offer on 3 for the price of 2 in frozen foods - we bought 3 packs fish fingers at 2.99 and 3 packs of frozen chips at 1.49 confidently expecting to save 4.48, At the checkout it gave two of the packs of chips free saving only 2.98. Complaints at customer service put it right but we were told that we should have put them through in separate transactions to make the full saving.

Thats because M&S takes the cheapest off free - they were right if you wanted to save the most expemsive then you should have put them through seperately.

The only store that I know that routinely takes the third item off having put it in price order is Boots for their Christmas promotion.
