Not turning up to Interviews

This perhaps should be on the vent board but just had to let this go!
I have been interviewing all day today and I had more people not turn up than actually did!! Why would you say yes to an interview on the phone, then confirm by email on Friday/Saturday then not turn up!!
I am so annoyed! I have wasted time waiting around for people that I could have made more productive!
Sorry about that. I feel better now!

Bane of my life, interviewees. You shortlist 6 a day, most of whom confirm, then you get the first one and the last one actually turning up, but you can't do anything constructive for the ones in-between as you don't know for sure till 10 minutes after the interview start time that they've changed their minds.
Then of the 2 that do turn up, one hasn't read the blurb/advert and doesn't realise it's a part time not full time job, so leaves as soon as they find out; the other wants to ask that even though the advert/job description clearly states shifts to include early mornings, evening and weekends (non-negotiable) can they fit in with school hours and holidays please.
And anyone you do appoint then fails their CRB or can't get a reference.
And breathe.........All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -

it's always who you know, not what you know. if you have no contacts then you always at a disadvantage.
Coming first in aptitude tests don't mean you are the best person for the job - attitude counts for far more so maybe you should check your interview skills?
Contacts don't necessarily work either, and can work against you. If an employer knows you well enough to know your plusses, you can be dead sure they know your minuses too...
OP- I would check your process. You shouldn't be getting that many no shows. I always tele int first, this ensures that applicants have the info they need to deduce whether the job is for them, and lets you screen out the chaff. I would then usually do an assessment centre where candidates can "meet" their colleagues and see if it's the kind of company they want, and you can see them in an almost real situation. You are then only interviewing the very motivated, and the most suitable.
Interviews are one of the least job predictive ways to recruit.
I've recently finished a recruitment programme for a £150k+ per year job. At first stage interviews (interviewing 16 from 240 applicants) only one didn't show. I called him and he said "which job? I've applied for so many". Not impressed.0 -

it does when the test is exactly what you'd be doing in the job. so many companies fail to choose the best applicant for the job, their loss.Martin has asked me to tell you I'm about to cut the cheese, pull my finger.0 -

Nonsense. Don't know any jobs where effectiveness is purely skill based- attitude and interpersonal skills count for far more. I recruit geologists, economists, welders, engineers, chief execs. apprentices - recruit for attitude every time.0 -
I'm guessing here but as long as you can prove you've had an offer of an interview to get the people at JCP off your back do you actually need to go, to keep your benefits.2014 Target;

that's a lot of no-shows! It must have been a very frustrating day.
I too now call the shortlisted people up for a chat before booking them for an interview. You can pick up a lot from a 5 minute chat about how interested they really are. Simply asking why they are interested in the role, confirming that the hours/pay are acceptable to them, that they really do have the right to work in the UK. It usually weeds out one or two people we would otherwise have invited in and would have been a waste of time or not shown up.Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j
OU student: A103 , A215 , A316 all done. Currently A230 all leading to an English Literature degree.
Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.0 -
I suppose it is the flipside of the numbers game. Instead of sending out 5 carefully targeted applications perhaps candidates send out 100 applications, get 10 interviews then go along to 5 of them.
I've seen people not turn up for an actual job they've been given more than once, what is the point in accepting it?0 -
