It seems to be very hard to identify who is in a banking group with who when you want to open a new account. I thought I'd start a thread to try to help people make sense of it. Here are all the UK brands I can find to be in a group with each other or linked to each other, if you know of any different please post and I will amend the lists. Or even better why not ask any bank/company you have credit with who they can set off from and to and post the results? Has set off happened to you, if so please let us know who from and who to (you can PM me if you'd rather). It all helps to build a clear and accurate picture.

Disclaimer: Although I will research the groups as well as I am able, not every organisation in a group can set off from every other. If you are concerned contact your bank or finance provider to check who they can set off from and to.

I refuse to be afraid of the big bad wolf, spiders, or debt collection agencies; one of them's not real and the other two are powerless without my fear.
(Ok, one of them is powerless, spiders can be nasty.)

As of the last count I have cleared
[STRIKE]23.16%[/STRIKE] 22.49% of my debt. :(

Debenhams (store cards) are also part of santander. As is the paypal mastercard.

Might be worth changing the virgin one to call it virgin/mbna?

Edit - Also AIB group - allied irish bank and first trust bank

Tixy I'm having trouble with Virgin, if you see the last in the list of sources they would appear to have links to RBS, and I haven't found anything about MBNA to date- what do you know?

There is a list of linked banks in this MSE article to do with savings. http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/savings/safe-savings

You can either type in a 'bank' and see who it is linked to or alternatively see the full list.

Many credit cards are issued by MBNA (owned by bank of america) https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/comment/19349125#Comment_19349125 and Virgin is listed. I am not entirely sure whether this means that the debt is with virgin or MBNA

They (MBNA) are part of Bank of America. Didn't think they were linked to any uk current accounts but not certain. Seems like it might just be Virgin's credit cards that are issued by MBNA.

Lok at the virgin site and then the 'legals' link and it seems the credit card is therefore different to the Virgin Bank Limited - a bit confusing.

    Hannah,

MBNA are wholly owned by the Bank of America.

You are correct in that Virgin do seem to be linked with lots of other companies. I know that their credit card was backed by MBNA.

I had a quick look at wikepedia, another good site for info.

The trouble with that one is, they're not the same definitions for savings safety and money safety for debtors. So for personal savings two banks in the same group might have separate insurance if you like, when it comes to setting off (stealing from you) they have no such distinctions.

Will go through it now though to make sure I haven't missed any associations.
