A+ CompTIA Certification

I still don't know quite what I want to do in the near future, but I would like to work with computers (I have pretty decent knowledge of most aspects of IT work already).

Has anyone become A+ Certified? Is it worth it? ie. does the certification help get into IT Support positions?

I have software to study with (there's no way I can afford expensive course fee's!), and so I'm using that to learn from (even if I don't take the exam it'll help improve my knowledge).

Just looking for some basic info on it really from anyone who has done it! :)

  • I work in support at a computer company, and the company takes the CompTIA and any Microsoft certifications more seriously than degrees in computing. I hope that helps.

  • I did that earlier this year at my local college- only had to pay exam fees of £60 as get some couuncil tax benefit. Also did the C&G System support exams there without taking the course

I work p/t anyway as a self employed PC technician so dont really know how helpful it would be in getting a job
  • I am currently studying this on my own. How did you get a council grant? I went to the Job Centre and they told me that there is no funding what so ever and implied there probably would never again be, to study for more advanced IT courses. Then again they also claim there is no such thing for New Deal for 25+. I really don't know where to go next as they deny that certain services exist when they clearly do:mad:

If it was was run by a college the JC wouldn't know about the course, but part of the rules re college funding allow people claiming JSA and IS to get full course fee remission
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

I did the A+ and N+ mainly for fun but found the level of knowledge required to achieve them just as challenging as the MCSE.

I dont work in computer support although our "helpdesk" people often come and ask me stuff :D as a result.

i did find the CompTia courses helped me to get onto my Oxford computer science degree course. At least i was told the selection bods favoured self starters who did those kind of courses.....that and being old probably helped ;)
  • Thanks for the help!

    That looks very promising! :)

How long did it take to study for it? I have a pretty good knowledge of computers and can pick most things up pretty quickly, but I don't want to rush into it. I guess once I can pass all practice questions with ease... but I have no idea how long that'll take!

I've only taken one networking exam so far and it took me about a month, fitting it in around working and bringing up 2 children. I'll be honest, though, I only did it because I had to as I loathe the job and am looking to do something completely unrelated to IT!

I got it free thru work few years ago.
I think it does help to get jobs as support/helpdesk roles..
But not to get any high-paid jobs in IT for that you need MCP, MCSE and experience.

But i would recommend to start with A+ then Network+, MCP e.t.c
If you want to stay in IT..

    good luck
