in Cutting tax
Hi guys.
Ive 3 months into my new job as a nurse. I earn £21176 a year before tax.
My tax code to start with was 647L NONCU in 2 months ive paid £713 tax, this seems a little high to me so I phoned the local tax office and they said I was on the wrong tax code and have changed it to 659L. Does this mean I will get a rebate?
My basic wage after tax is £1369 a month this month that is about what I recieved despite have overtime of about £250. Which seems like a lot of tax, im wondering if I will get any back?
Thanks

HMRC have increased your code number (presumably due to expenses) and so your employer will make a refund to you in your next pay packet (or you will at least pay less tax)0

647L is the normal tax code although it should be cumulative not non-cumulative so you appear to be on the emergency code.
Did you hand in a P45 or complete a P46?
You say you were working for 3 months - is that May, June & July? Were you working April?
Regardless of the cumulative code, a salary of £21,176 would see tax of £245.02 and National Insurance of £141.68 each month.

Probably added on an allowance for uniform cleaning.
Main thing is though - is it a cumulative tax code?My basic wage after tax is £1369 a month
Normal basic net wage should be £1377.97.this month that is about what I recieved despite have overtime of about £250. Which seems like a lot of tax, im wondering if I will get any back?

If you've overpaid you will get it back but without seeing cumulative figures for the last 3 months no-one can be sure.0 -

The difference between 659L and 647L will reduce your monthly tax by about £2 all else being equal.
The code that you are on at the moment is an emergency code. It is impossible to say what your correct tax position is at the moment without knowing the exact gross payments you have received each month so far in this employment along with the tax paid figures, and if any taxable income was received in this tax year before starting your current job the gross and tax paid details for this as well. Emergency tax codes are usually quite close to what your correct tax is but under some circumstances they can result in you paying to much or to little tax.0
