Huge loan debt from a clerical error that was their fault.
Good day,
I have just recieved a phone call from the loan company that my wife had a loan wife several years ago. I phoned them as soon as I was sorting out my wife's finances earlier in the year, and asked for the settlement amount, which they stated was £537.10. I paid it in full, and the account was closed.
I have recieved a phone call today, saying that an error was made on the account BEFORE the settlement date on her account where the bank accidentally transfered money into her account so that the settlement amount SHOULD of been higher than it was.
They now say that we owe them £1038, and we have to pay this immediatly. Please tell me this is some bad dream, and they are just trying their luck with someone they think is an easy touch.
Thanks in advance for your reply.

Do you have it in writing that the £537.10 was a full and final payment?Thinking critically since 1996....0

If the account was closed and you have it in writing that the account was closed then as far as I can see you can tell them to go get f**ked.
My advice probably wouldn't stand in a court of law but in Elvis' court it would

you have the issue though that if funds were accidentaly placed into the account, it can be taken back giving a debt.0

Can you confirm that you contacted the lender and obtained a settlement figure rather than a debt collector?
In any event, if you have a settlement figure in writing tell them to bog off.

Do I follow this correctly.??
At some point during the loan term, the lender just randomly deposited a wad of cash into your wifes account for no reason?
Common advice on here is not to fall for the settlement figure given over the phone, it is often just tactics to get you to pay a chunk off the total.
Settlement figures must be in writing with "Full and Final Settlement" on the letter.
When you say the account was closed, are you sure it was closed or was that an assumption based on the understanding you had settled it??0
