should i pay mortgage or keep the shares?

Hi all, just looking for some opinions on something. It has always been our dream to be mortgage free, we are about 9 yrs away from it ending, fixed one for 5 yrs. About three yrs ago hubbys shares that he has were worth alot of money, i suggested we use a third of their value to pay off mortgage and keep the rest as shares for our retirement days/emergency money. He left it too long and since then they has drastically in value! However, we have enough to pay off the mortgage and have about 8 thousand pounds worth of shares left.

At the moment he is in a v stressful job, he is worried he might lose it because of an incident (don't want to go into it, just made a mistake for the 2nd time ), he's probably over worrying and will get a smack on the wrists but he's on about changing jobs anyway, which would be for a lot less money and if this happened we would probably struggle to pay all the bills, so i said to him if we pay the mortgage off its £280 a month less to worry about plus we save about £5,000 by paying it early. Not v money savvy, just wanted to ask you if you had the money/shares would you use it or keep it and carry on paying mortgage? Sorry to ramble on, am a bit distressed at the moment and only had 2 hours sleep last night! Many thanks x

thats where an emergency fund helps---as shares are a longterm investment your not forced to sell at wrong-time.in 3 years the market has fallen about 25%--was worse, making a bit of a recovery.

if your struggling to meet bills and losing sleep---you have to look at current situation---if your share loss is about 25%---id bite the bullet an sell

you cant think back---think of present an future--re-build
