I thought I read somewhere that infact "hot" food isn't good for you, as it isn't natural in evolution. For example, hot food/drinks could contribute to throat cancer etc.
  • As a working mum, we average 1 hot meal aday. Evening meal is always at the table so we can discuss how our day have been. Even on toast night is eaten at the table. I don't think it hurts every now and again to skip a hot meal for something that is better suited to the weather or even the pocket!

During the cold weather I like a hot dinner (teatime) for us.

We do eat alot of salads though so I guess some days, nothing it hot, unless you count toast :D
  • On the other hand, there is a school of thought which says that heating veg in any way does away with the vitamin benefit

As I understand it the cooking of some veg actually enhances the vitamin content. Can't remember which veg though - carrots or peas or somthing.
This still doesn't stack up against the 'piping hot' requirement many people have for their food.

Maybe this is just cultural? In Eastern Europe they serve "hot" food lukewarm. I've been holidaymaking in Bulgaria the last couple of years and a lot of fellow holidaymakers I spoke to complained that their food wasn't warm enough. I prefer my food not too hot and some things like quiche, pies or even toast quite cold.

I do admit I feel deprived though if I do not have one hot meal a day, even in the summer.

I think its habit really... Nutritionally, I'm certain we can get everything we need from cold food, so in theory we don't need "hot" food.

However, I also think it depends on the weather - gazpacho (a cold tomato soup) is one of my favourite meals when its warm outside:D, but I'm fairly sure it wouldn't make me feel so good when the weather's cold, wet and miserable. On the other hand, sausage, mash and onion gravy isn't so great in summer...but it sure can hit the spot in the middle of winter!!;)

Saving money is fabulous - but life is for living not just continual snacking on salad and fruit.
One hot meal a day is my average except in winter I may have the odd soup for lunch and porridge for brekky.

During the summer we eat a lot of salads, sandwiches etc in the winter we definately prefer "warming foods". Porridge for breakfast, soups for lunch and a hot meal at tea. We also like a warm milky drink before bed. The seasons dictate to some extent what we eat as I like to buy seasonal foods and of course the weather, I don't really want to be eating stew and dumplings when the temperature is in the eighties or salad when it's below freezing.

  • i'm sitting at work eating soup right now! it's horrible outside (wet and nasty) and the hot food is making me feel better. right now, for me, a cold sandwich just wouldn't have the same effect of picking me up! i don't *need* the hot food, but psychologically it feels so much better!

  • someone earlier on mentioned one square meal a day... i think this saying comes from the old sailors from hundreds of years ago....where their one hot meal was served on a square plate...and when i mean hot it was basically some sort of dried meat/cereal based gew/paste that was added to water.... to re hydrate it...and then served with dry biscuits/bread..

    or something like that...

During the summer I am happy to have salads but in the winter I do like to have a hot meal at tea time.

Don't know why just always done it. Makes me feel a bit warmer.
