Hey,
Have a look on Gok Wan's website. Also try putting your idols in Goo9le and see if you can buy cheaper versions of what they are wearing....0 -
Playing around with things you've already got and layering stuff up or wearing them in different combinations might be worth a try?
(It kept me going when I couldn't buy any new clothes for a while.) Random combinations - or things you don't think will work are good to try out because it gets you thinking along new pathways and you come up with new creative ideas.
Another useful exercise is to try and wear everything you own before wearing something twice. It makes you think hard about what can be worn with what.
If you mentallly put your clothes into categories - such as everyday stuff, going out stuff etc then try mixing it up and wearing going out clothes in the day for example.
If you tend to wear those boots when you wear these jeans etc then don't! Wear something else. You might not even realise that you only wear the same two tops with that skirt etc.
Primark is a good source of cheap accessories to restyle your old favourites, too.
And charity shops are fab for belts bags and jewellery.
Push yourself to experiment actively and your own personal style will develop.
There's a great book called 10 Steps to Fashion Freedom that pushes you to think of three words to describe your style, then think about your lifestyle and preferences etc to build up a picture of your own style. It's quite hard work and it's not at all celeb related, it's all about you but it'll definitely get you there.

Well done on wanting to do your own thing, I think we're becoming ever more comformist as a nation . All the time I see whole groups of people dressed more or less the same and wonder why they do that?!

Good for you!! I think nowadays with the rise of cheap clothes i think there tends to be a 'generic' look. I am always intrigued when someone looks individual.
Don't worry too much getting laughed at, i'm sure nobody will, and those who do will just be jelous.
Why not put something on you would normally wear then wear something completly new and different. It may be a different jacket, or a statment piece of jewelry or different shoes, once they are 'bedded in' you could add something else that's different. Gradually you will add a new layer to your look untill you arrive at a look that you completly want.

I always think as long as you feel good in clothes then don't think about what other say, last winter I wore various coloured tights - not for everyone but I loved them and they were so bright they always put a smile on my face. As Sharon has said previously there is a generic look out there, even the shops all have the same things in - good on you for being different.
You could always alter clothes a la Gok as in the second post, I got a denim shirt and cut it the bottom off it and the arms so its more waistcoat- guaranteed there may be denim waistcoats out there but none like mine plus it was from a jumble sale and only cost 10p0 -

I really hope you enjoy working through it.
I found it hard going at times but it definitely works. Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted. Einstein0 -
Can you sew buttons on? One way I find of customising something so that it is completely unique is to change the buttons to something a little more funky than the original shirt/top/cardi/coat etc came with.
Sometimes when I'm clothes shopping I will try randomly selected items on, particularly if it is a style I don't usually wear, or a colour I don't usually wear. Sometimes I have some really nice surprises and find things that suit me that I wouldn't have thought, and other times I find a complete dog's dinner looking back at me in the mirror in the changing room
I know doing this isn't necessarily going to find you a style that is uniquely your own, but it might help you step out of your comfort zone if that makes sense?
