Is it just me? Make-up woes

My day-to-day look is mineral powder foundation and eyeshadow.
Lipstick/lipgloss wears off very quickly and I'm crap applying mascara. I don't understand how some ladies can put it on using a hand held tiny mirror on a train - I apparently have no hand-eye co-ordination.
Stormcloudgathering, do you have any essential bits of kit you would recommend to a woman who wants to look vaguely presentable? Eyelash curlers, brushes, etc? I realise a bit of technique is required, but every little helps!
I have no tools in my makeup bag at all and I'm wondering if this is a mistake. 0 -
I think Bare Minerals do a fantastic free make-over, they show you how to do everything and even give you a DVD.
I've had a make over at most 'premium' beauty stands and have never felt pressured to buy anything, Estee Lauder was fantastic she showed me never to rub make-up/cream into the area you should lightly pat with your ring finger
.
Youtube is good for tutorials, and best of all they are free!0 -
Hi there
I am not a great makeup wearer, generally bare-faced or smudge of mascara only for work. For a night out or occasion I am happy to wear eye make up and lip gloss - I have never got on with lipstick and can't get the hang of foundation at all!
I am getting married next year and have asked a friend who is a makeup pro to come to a few make up counters with me to help me choose products and help me practise... would like to get make up done on the day but its too expensive really!fran-o0 -
Where do you live???
I'd love to help you out for free...

Recently my OH has been making comments on the fact I don't ever really try much with make up, and what's really starting to play on my mind is that I'm getting married next year. I'm on a budget and would prefer to do my own make up but worried I just wont get it right!!
Will try that website myself.
Ellay that's exactly why I've been thinking about it so much - I am also getting married next year and I'm really worried about what I'm going to do for make up. I could pay someone to do it, but as I'm so unused to wearing it I'm worried I will feel really uncomfortable and might not like the way it looks. But then I'm just not capable of doing it myself!0 -

TBH I find beauty counters really intimidating. There's no way I could go and have a make over in that sort of environment, I'd need to find someone I felt comfortable with. I'm a bit weird like that, I find it an ordeal just going to the hairdressers!0 -
You could try a MAC counter, they do a lesson for about £20 which is redeemable against any MAC purchases, MAC products are excellent so I wouldnt imagine you'll have a problem finding something and the SAs are knowedgable and on the whole "normal", I had mine done a long time ago and they did half my face and made me do the other half so that I could do it myself - hth:)Thank you for this site MartinThe time for change has comeGood luck for the future0

Yes, I forgot to say in my post, I'm very short sighted, and I think this is part of the problem. Although I'm sure even if I had perfect vision I would still be struggling, I think I'm just cack-handed! I will definitely try the dots thing, thank you.
This should go in your favour as being short sighted makes your eyes look smaller behind glasses (unless you are wearing contacts?) so any mistakes shouldn't be too noticeable.
I am also fair but found that I am allergic to eyelash tint so only get it on special occassions like for going on holiday as my eyes swell up and get really sore.
Unlike yourself I am a total makeup junkie but have struggled over the years to find the right makeup to go with my colouring.
My tips for you are:
if you feel self conscious about mascara go for one that isn't volumising, you want to add a bit of colour not too much definition - give it a year and you will be looking for big fat lashes once you get more confident
find a neutral pallette of colours e.g. fawns/browns or greys and use these sparingly to build up your confidence. A light brown can be used like eyeliner on a cotton bud or brush to add definition.
If you don't like lipstick (I don't either) there are loads of glossy lip balms that you can start with that add to the groomed look without adding too much drama.
Reading between the lines I think you may also be anxious about other people's reactions to seeing you in makeup. If you do it gradually they will get used to seeing you with a bit and you can build it up with amounts and colours as you get braver. The compliments will come flooding in about your new improved look which should give you confidence to go a bit braver
I would also recommend going to different places to get makeovers e.g. makeup counters, body shop at home party, college training days etc This will let you see how different styles look on you.
Good luckIf you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got!0 -
I'm with snuggles in finding beauty counters intimidating and I shudder at the thought of sitting there in public being done. Think I'd rather pay a little extra and have somebody come to my house, or me go to a private session. May search threads to see if there's anyone in Cheshire/North Staffs area recommended on here...in the meantime if any such person happens to be reading please let me know
