What's eating my Basil?!

Does anybody know what pests are partial to Basil? I planted a herb garden a while back and all the plants are flourishing except the Basil! It's getting eaten by something, the leaves look like lace (full of holes) and some are disappearing altogether. I have poked around in the soil and looked under all the leaves but I can't see anything at all. I would blame slugs (ugh nasty things) but surely they wouldn't be responsible for the lacey leaves? Has anybody any ideas?

I'll second that - as I've got something having a go at my basil as well. I havent had the lacy leaves - just the holes.

Mind you - I've discovered some (very) lacy leaves amongst the bottom leaves on my tomato plants and would like to know what that is.

My basil got slugged, but that was the whole plant being munched!
If it's lots of little pinprick type holes ( as per my poor salad leaves), it could be flea beatles.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • They are not pinprick type holes, rather bigger than that, and some leaves are being demolished altogether. Tomorrow I am going out with a magnifying glass for a better close up look! Thanks anyway, that's another pest I have just learned about!
