Council Tax (Student living with 4 non students)

in Cutting tax
Hi
I am on my placement year (as I am still a full-time student I get council tax exemption), but I can't imagine my house mates would be too happy if they are effectively just paying my share, does anyone have any knowledge about what should happen?
Thanks

as long as your uni gives you the exemption certificate and you show it to your council then the other 4 are liable for the CT themselves and will have to split it 4 ways not 5 ways
not sure what is your problem?
If you think that is unfair on them, then voluntarily pay them your 1/5th share anyway!0 -
Do they get any discount, or is it just them covering my share?0

depends how you look at it
a single person pays 75% of the full tax
a couple pay 50% each
3 people pay 33.3% each
4 people pay 25% each
a student doesn't have to pay anything legally; so it's up to you0 -
The earlier posts are correct, legally you are not responsible for any of the Council Tax, however you may wish to come to a personnal arrangement to split the charge due.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0
