Which kind of bedframe should I buy?

Hi
I have got a new kingsize pocket sprung mattress and am looking to buy a kingsize bed frame. Any advice on whether to get a metal or wooden bed frame?
On our last wooden bed frame the mattress sagged in the middle and we had really bad back pain! We need one with the best support and suppose the hardest!!
Thanks
Jason

  • I would recommend a box type base with drawers (the base comes in 2 halves). You will always need storage space. An ordinary frame will allow bed mites to fall down onto whatever you keep under the bed. This way there is a complete barrier and the base will be firm enough to not allow the mattress to sag. Three problems solved in one. Happy dreams.

I have just bought a metal bed frame because I prefer the way they look and have always had pine bedframes in the past, which have lasted but I wanted a change. I bought this from Dreams - it is from The Original Bedstead Company but the Dreams price was better. I haven't had it delivered yet, so I can't comment on the quality, but the reviews are good.

Go for whatever you prefer. However it is the platform that the mattress sits on that is important:
    • If it is a mesh base then you can get the mattress sagging towards the middle.
    • If it is a slatted base then you shouldn't have a problem with sagging.
    • A divan base would be suitable for all mattress types.
Remember that if you use a pocket sprung mattress on a slatted base then you will need to lay a sheet of pegboard or hardboard over the slats to prevent damage to the springs.

I think they were refering to divan bases.
  • Divans are definitely the best in my opinion.

We have a Posturepedic bed, many suppliers make them, ours is a Sealy, heaven.

Most bed manufacturers make divan bases. I would stay away from the Silentnight group though (which includes Sealy, Rest Assured, Layezee, and The Pocket Sprung Bed Company), due to reliability problems. In fact I would stay away from all big brands, and go with smaller independent manufacturers.

Not quite sure where you got from my message that only some make Divans. Also don't believe a word of it. Sealy have been reliable. We have have 3 beds over a couple of decades and never once had a reliability problem in terms of delivery or quality.

You said 'many suppliers make them'.

It's fact, and not just opinion. They used to be good quality years ago, but not any more. I speak to 100's of people who have owned them, and it seems that the average life is 12 to 18 months. This is especially the case with the posturepedic range that contains a continuous spring system (the same as Miracoil). Most manufacturers used to use a continuous spring system, but most have stopped due to it being very unreliable, and very noisey.
