Can you use money off vouchers if you don't buy the product?

Someone told me that you can still take vouchers to supermarkets and even if you don't buy the products, you can use the money off vouchers at the till? I've got one for 50p off a couple of items that we don't actually buy - will they still accept them then? It says on the back its for money off X product and don't try to reclaim it off anything else?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Some supermarkets do some dont depends on the checkout operator, I think more dont now0

Ahh ok, that could be embarrassing then! I wondered if the till automatically rejected/accepted as it would know if you'd bought the item or not?0

Being an ex js employee we were told not to accept coupons for stuff if the customer hadnt bought said item, some customers got a bit weird about it when i told them they couldnt use it0

I think it was because Tesco used to let them, I always used to tell them we're not Tesco when they got funny about it. There were always people that though policies at other Supermarkets applied to all the others as well, like being able to buy Lottery tickets at the tills rather than just Kiosk. One woman wouldn't accept it when I told it wasn't possible and there is no option on the till to do it, apparently I was lying and she had done it at the till before. I then saw her go talk to a supervisor who told her exactly the same thing and the she left in a huff.0 -
Asda used to take vouchers for anything whether you bought the item or not - but not any more. It's 5 o'clock somewhere!0

Tesco used to do it until the practice was highlighted on TV so loads more shoppers did it, then a week or so later it was withdrawn.
This was a year or two ago now.
It's only a game

All our local tesco self serve tills let you use 2 coupons without it needing verification, scan a 3rd and it needs the assitant to enter a code, this is whether you buy the item or not. Some checkout operators will take coupons when you dont buy the item in our tesco stores.
Asda stopped it ages ago and dont take any coupons on self serve, Asda will check you have brought the item.
sainsburys dont take them unless brought item - not tried on self service but know self service only takes max of £2 coupons unless assitant sorts it out.
Morrisons never have taken coupons if you havent brought item.
I used to work for co-op many years ago and we always took them was checkout operators discretion ie - not taking too many off one person or too many in a day or the ones for £2 off whisky, vodka brands etc if they hadnt brought any alchohol what so ever - it needed to look realistic when your till was taken for totalling up at end of shift if that makes sense.0
