Don't use Depo Provera. I'm 20 and have been with my boyfriend for ages now, and all we have ever used is Condoms. I tried the jab once and it was hellish, I understand this isn't the same for everyone but I was constantly bleeding. I cried on a daily basis, it went on for about 5months. My new Dr also told me increased use of Depo Provera will cause osteoporosis, which is very scary. I have personally never taken the pill as I don't like the idea of messing around with my body. So I can't offer any advice on that.

But the coil/Depo Provera mess with your body too even though you aren't taking a tablet every day. They work in the same way as tablets.

Yasmin (pill) has always been my contracepive of choice. I've gone back on it lately because it helps with bad period cramps.

Exactly as everyone is saying - the side effects are not the same for everyone. the joy of the internet is that people only tend to be post when something is wrong. Not many people (except here!) post just to say how well things are!

I've been on Microgynon30 for 10 years. Never had a single problem. Switched to the implant a month ago because I was getting increasingly forgetful about taking my pill! Implant did not hurt to put in. I had a huge bruise and then a period for about 9 days but thats it so far. No noticeable mood swings or weight gain. I also liek freaking people out by poking it!

  • I don't understand the aversion to condoms. My OH and I have been together 17 years, and its the only form we've ever used, and we've never had any accidents with it, so in my experience, its been 100% effective. It's clean and tidy too, - no mess to clear up afterwards!

  • Hi I have just had 2nd coil fitted (mirena) which is part hormone I have used it since the birth of 3rd kid who has just turned 6 this month and have had no side effects what so ever would recomend it to everyone!
  • Do please go and talk this out with your family planning service (it's now called reproductive and sexual health where I am in NI but it's the same clinic). The staff are hugely knowledgable about different contraception etc. They're also great about things like smears etc.

Personally I've been on 2 pills - femodene and cerazette and no problems with either. I had to come off femodene having had one migrane which they got hyper paranoid about :) I was reluctant at first just cos femodene worked well for me but am really enjoying the no periods part of the cerazette experience!

I hate every form of contraception. I want something that will stop me getting pregnant without having any disruptions to my cycle or my hormones. Im just gunna have to wait untill im older and start trying for a baby. What a blissful time that will be!!

I'm on Yasmin due to extremely painful periods....now I just get aches instead of full-blown screaming agony (from knees to neck) My boobs don't swell or get as sore, just a bit tender, and the pain is controllable with paracetemol and hot water bottles (nice in the winter, as one always makes its way to my feet) And my PMT is nowhere near as bad.

Go and talk it all over with a nurse at your local sexual health/family planning clinic. They will be able to go over all the different options in detail with you. You and your OH might want to go together to discuss your options. Basically you have four:

    1) Barrier method - male or female condoms, or a cap/diaphragm. These are used with or without spermicides.

    2) Hormonal method - used by the woman, many methods including various types of pill, coil, implant, patch and injection.

    3) "Natural" method - withdrawal, charting your cycle etc. Less reliable than 1, 2 and 4, and not generally considered medically to be reliable methods of contraception.

    4) Abstinence.

If you decide you are not going to use condoms, and either of you has had any kind of sex (oral, vaginal or anal) with anyone before, it would be wise to both get full STD tests done before you have sex together without one. This can be done at the clinic too. If you do want to use condoms, you can get them free at the clinics ;).
  • I have been on the pill on and off for over 30 years and never had any problems at all.If everyone took side effects of medication as gospel no one would take it.The only reason i am not on the pill now is because i am over 40 and smoke, otherwise i would be on it like a shot.I am going on my hols next week and due on for the whole week if i was still on the pill it would be no period for me.
