I live on £10 worth of food a week, but I couldn't tell you how I do it, it just happens naturally, there is two men and me in my house hold, the shopping comes to £30 and that is with toilet roll, washing powder and the shopping delivery charge. I guess we don't eat a lot, I eat once a day (other than a couple of apples in the day), I had a veg curry for tea last night with wholemeal rice. I don't deliberately only order that little amount of food, but it just only ever comes to £30, the most it's come to for the week is about £38, but that is with pop, cleaning stuff, deodorant.

You could always look into the freegan lifestyle. It is amazing how many people are into it.
  • Sainsbury's do a large pack of cooking bacon for £1.50 which goes a very long way, as shebrett said, due to the strong taste (can't tell you how big it is as I can't see it online, but it's huge compared to packs of sliced). Because it's made from offcuts it can be smoked/unsmoked, bits/slices.... you can check over the packs to pick one that suits you.

Anyway meals to use it with:

    Pasta with Bacon & Tomato
steamed/baked bacon dumplings with tomato or white sauce (precook bits of bacon, let cool and mix into dumpling mix... or easier, bacon in the sauce with plain dumplings)
Bacon Sarnie (if you picked one with slices)
    Chunks in a Yorkshire pudding

i also on a very low buget. mines £30 aweek 1 adult 1 kid and 1 baby, £10 electric, £4 gas rest on food and bits. i dont drive so i dont have to worry about petrol. what i do is mainly a delivery shop. it means paying out in bulk but its worth it. i mainly shop from asda, i order a mostly basic range cans, basic anything aslong as it taste ok. its normaly £4 delivery but if they dont have your iteam in stock they normaly give you the next brand up, so you kind of save money there. And as you do a shop like that you dont tend to end up buying more then what you need week to week.

    Saves me loads!

Remeber if its on sale dosnst mean you need it! :)

Try and go to the supermarket just before closing (sunday is good if you don't want to go out late) and get some whoopsies?

I base our shopping around reduced items and have on some weeks only spent £10 for two adults. Do you have a co op nearby? I find they are far and away the best for reducing, especially on bread (bakery loaves and even speciality breads usually go down to 10p) but also on refrigerated items (I've had fresh pasta sauce for 10p and cheese for 20p) and some fruit and veg (peppers for 1p, fine if you use them immediately or freeze them).

I tend to then go to Aldi for their super 6 fruit and veg, and then to sainsbury's for more whoopsies, usually meat/fish and refrigerated items (I once got an £18 leg of lamb for £3.50! and sea bass fillets £1.99, pizza express pizzas for £1 etc) also their basic items are really good and there's a really varied range.

Basing the shopping around reduced stuff is so much more exciting too cos you never know what you're going to get, and we eat really good quality food for very little cos it tends to be the more expensive items that don't sell and so get reduced.

Anyway i've waffled enough, hope this helps and good luck!

if you buy a bag of vege mince (soya), for around £1.50 you can make about 8 meals out of it, mix it with onions and tinned tomatoes. Serve with either potatoes as shepherds pie, or spaghetti for spaghetti bolognese

I am now living on about £10 a week worth of food and I found the key is planning. Each month I cook shepherds pie, veggie lasagne, pasta bake, pizzas and fish pie, which are then divided into 4/5 and frozen. Before I did it first I checked on a comparison site to see how much all the ingerdients cost and each month go into the store with a list of the exact ingredients and prices. It means each evening I have a home made ready meal which I know is healthy and cheap

Check out the link Daphne posted. There are two separate monthly planner options on there - a few of us have tested the first one, and are about to embark on the testing of the second one - both of them work out at £25per person per month, so a fair bit less than £10 a week.

I live near co-op. What time do they usually reduce their food?
