CD and DVD recycling

Does anyone have any tips for disposing of old CDs and DVDs? I've got loads or CDs (and jewel cases), they're not worth anything to anyone as they're all just things off the front of magazines, etc.
I'm not going to be making anything from them or using them as coasters etc. There seem to be companies who recycle them but it looks like I'd have to pay to send them: http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=cd+recycling
Any ideas?

You could try offering them on Freecycle or Freegle to see if anyone will take them. I received a bunch of CD jewel cases that way - very useful!

How about seeing if the local playgroups or school, church holiday clubs could make use of them for any activities? We love what we are doing and we love why we're doing it!!0

They make good bird scarers when you plant out seeds in the spring/summer.
It may be worth trying your local church, ours run activities for children throughout the year and were asking for things like these last year or as someone has already suggested perhaps your local school/playgroup.We love what we are doing and we love why we're doing it!!0 -

don't think so, think they just list it because they often have those free cds in card sleeves stuck to the front of the mag."And suddenly I find myself listening to a man I've never known before,Telling me about the sea..."0 -
If they can't be recycled, what about offering them to a local school's art department? They always need bits and bobs for art collages etc.0
