Debt Company Cannot Provide Any Debt Information

Hi Guys,
I have a debt company asking for settlement of a bill they claim exsits from my old address back in February 2006. At that time i had split from my girlfriend and was going through a bad time. So its possible i could of ran this bill up. The bill is for £500 for water rates.
Anyway, i have been paying this company £20.00 a month but after speaking to a friend, he advised me to request them to send me a copy of the bill showing how they reached this figure etc. All I received originally was a letter saying i owe money to the water people.
Since I sent this letter questioning it, they have just come back saying they will suspend the account until they get this information from their client.
My question to you guys is, if they cannot provide this information eg copy of the bill and breakdown of the bill then this surely would make it unenforceable and i am wondering if that is the case am i entitled to my money back i have already paid to this debt company ??
Please help
Thanks

have you spoken to the water company. Ask them how much is outstanding. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0

Yes and they say i must contact this debt company, getting the run around with them.0

I wouldn't hold your breath on getting your money back unless you wish to take them to the courts but they would have to produce proof of this debt if they wanted to get a Court to judge you liable for it.0

If they are unable to provide proof you owe this money, do ask for a refund. If they refuse take them to court. You clearly made payment on a debt they alleged you owed. But when queried it was found they had no proof money was owed as such you would like it back.
If the debt does exist and proof provided, and you have overpaid, the excess much be refunded.
However the debt does exist, but it was not enforceable i.e. statute barred. Then money cannot be refunded, as the debt does exist it just cannot have a court order to enforce it.
Just hold your breath until they come forward with proof of the account. £500 for water rates is alot. I lived in london in a 2 bedroom flat share, and I think our water for the year was only about £100.Although no trees were harmed during the creation of this post, a large number of electrons were greatly inconvenienced.
There are two ways of constructing a software design: One way is to make it so simple that there are obviously no deficiencies, and the other way is to make it so complicated that there are no obvious deficiencies0
