Letter from MIL Collections.
Hi all,
I got a letter from these guys a week or two ago about a 10 year old debt which they now claim I owe. The value is around £3.5k. I made the stupid mistake of calling them up and denying the debt was mine, so they told me they'd go get more information and call me back. Today they texted me and ask me to call them, so I did, and they started to get a bit frisky with me - far more agressive and told me that I had to pay the debt because they had a signed agreement, and they would now be starting small claim proceedings. I've asked them for a copy of said signed document.
Now, when I was younger I was a bit (a lot) stupid and messed up a lot. This is one of those things I messed up. When I moved out of home where this debt was registered, my parents simply replied to all letters stating I was no longer at this address and they didn't know where I'd gone. In all honesty I had forgotten about this, and was under the impression that after 6 years of no contact (it's been closer to 10) these things got written off.
Does anyone have any advice on where I proceed from here? I'm now concerned I'll start getting knocks at the door and inundated with phone calls.
To clarify, I'm now (one CC aside) debt free and fully in control of my finances with a good credit record and I really don't want this to affect that
.
Thanks for any advice guys

The honest thing to do would be to repay the debt if you borrowed the money."We act as though comfort and luxury are the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic about” – Albert Einstein0 -
The debt is not written off, but if there has been no contact or payment or acknowledgement for 6 years (five in Scotland) then the debt is 'statute barred' and cannot be pursued through the courts. I'm not sure whether they can still trash your credit record, though.I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.0

I agree with Iolanthe07, after six year the debt becomes Statue Barred, so just ignore them and any further correspondence they may send you.
