Freezer Door Won't close! Help!!

Small son was taking a long time getting an icecream out of the freezer the other night.............when I went to investigate he was trying to close the door, but it kept springing open!
Nothing is in the way. It seems to be the hinge on the door.
At the moment it is wedged closed with a plank of wood. (Stylish!).
Any ideas I could try to fix it?

Hi,
are you sure nothing has slipped down between door and freezer body, maybe down near the base?0 -
also something that happens to us is that a layer of frost builds up on the front edge of the top drawer and means the door doesn't close properly0

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I have checked for any obstructions, but it seems to be inside the door. It just springs back before you have even closed it! 'Tis a mystery!0

Some doors actually have a coiled spring inside of the hinge mechanism to hold the door firmly shut. My last (chest) one did.
Sometimes these springs bend the wrong way and cause the problem you describe. The spring may be visible, or may have a plastic cover over it......... OR......... it may be a different type without the spring !0 -
It's happened to mine a couple of times (usually when one of the kids has been in it strangely enough). The door won't shut properly and has to be wedged shut. On mine it's a metal part of the hinge that sits in a recess on top of the door, it gets dislodged - needs loosening then retightening in the correct position with a spanner.0

Are you sure it's not over loaded??0

Hi,
Thanks for everyones suggestions. I will get a child lock when we gat back from hols. This seems to be the simplest solution until we can get a new freezer. The plank of wood wedging the door shut should hold until we get back!!!!! HE x0
