dumpling sheets

Hello,

I'm hoping someone might be able to help me.. I really want to have a go at making gyoza (Steamed dumplings) but i'm not sure where i can pick up the dumpling pastry sheets from, has anyone spotted them in any of the big supermarkets? I'd rather not have a trek across town to find the chinese supermarket if i can get it a bit closer.

I have tried searching on mysupermarket but i'm not even sure what i should be searching for... :o

Any help would be great!

Thanks

Han

Dont quote me on this, and I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong but I am sure normal old filo pastry will work just as well, very similar in texture so should be ok, have a go you can buy it in the fridges of the supermarkets for under 2 quid.

In my opinion Definitely not the same unfortunately, because they are steamed the filo doesnt have the same texture. Dumpling pastry is thicker hence they are more stodgy than filo.

I agree, I make gyoza quite a lot & the texture of filo's quite different from the dumpling wrappers, I've never seen them in any of the major supermarkets
Han I think you're looking at a trip across town

PS ... watch out for all the different kinds of wrappers, there are rice ones, spring roll ones etc, which are not what you want
I get Eagle brand, they're called dumpling pastry & are in the freezer section, there are around 50 in a pack

happy gyoza making, once you've tried it you'll be hooked :D

Thanks guys, that's a great help. I shall head off across town when i get chance - i couldn't find them on that website Sarah but thank you, i'm sure i'll find lots of other goodies on there!

I just hope i can make them now! I love the ones you get from wagamama's but don't want to have to go there if i fancy some!

Wish me luck! (And feel free to share any pearls of wisdom) :)

    They are here http://www.wingyipstore.co.uk/display-product.php?ref=81220&currentpageref=1039

They make the pastry as opposed to buying it because they are only flour and water.

I have the Wagamama cookbooks & can PM you the recipe from Ways With Noodles if you like? (can't post it here for copyright reasons) although they're not the ones I usually make

there are quite a few videos on you tube showing folding techniques, I'll see if I can find some for you later
my daughter was taught by a Japanese friend of hers & she showed me,

now it's become something of an obsession, although I've never been dedicated enough to make my own dough :)

I haven't looked at the books since pre-gyoza days & forgot all about them, I'd tried a couple of their other recipes & they were waay too complicated for the home kitchen, making 3 different sauces before you even start for instance, fine for mass catering, but ...

anyway, turns out there are actually 4 different recipes, chicken, chicken & mushroom, prawn, & pork but I haven't tried any so can't vouch for them, I'll give you my recipe too though because I know that works

the method sounds really complicated & a bit intimidating, but once you get into the flow of stuffing & folding them it can be really relaxing & fun, especially if you've a friend or two helping
the cooking bit is simple once you get the hang of it & you'll be surprised at how well they turn out :)

I have to go out, but will be back soon, meanwhile here's a Youtube Link to some gyoza demonstrations

    hi Han,
sorry, my PM's been acting up, but I'll get the Wagamama recipes typed out in Word so all I have to do is paste them when it's working again, I'll post my own (copyright-free ;)) recipe this evening :)
