Student loan fears

I've been getting all these really threatening letters about my old student loan from back in the mid 90s and they are kind of frightening me with stuff about making me bankrupt and arresting my wages. OK i AM on benefits so sont have any wages but am worried that they can freeze my bank account or somehting.

Theres no way I can afford to pay this back and all these years I have never had anything like the sort of income that they say you will have to pay it back now.

These debt collectors are really threatening and I a, wondring if the best thing to do is pay them a pound a week or something. Thing is, I think I dont have to pay it once I get to 50 which isn;t that many yaers away. What can they do to me, like bailifs or whatever.
I cant stop worrying about this.I am too ill to work, would they take this into account? I told them that before when i first got ill and the student loan company let me have no payments, but the debt collectors are very harsh and im worried. all advice really appreciated, urgent, thanks.
