Problems with MBNA

I stupidly decided to stop paying MBNA by direct debit and pay online. Unfortunately, when I was on holiday, I missed a payment. After 4 days overdue, they were on the phone! I decided not to speak to them as it was the weekend and couldn't pay money into the bank to cover a debit card payment until the Monday. They phoned my work on the Monday morning and told them to tell me to phone them. I had already made the payment that I had missed so left it at that. Now they are phoning again demanding the next payment now but the statement says this is actually due on 18/08/10. Do I have to pay this now?

Hi Magic, I would write - not phone - and explain that you have already made the payment and the next will be paid when its due on the 18th. Have they added a late payment/interest amount to it? If so, maybe what you have paid does not cover the amount and they are wanting that? It might also be an idea to reinstate the DD just in case, that way you know it will be paid on time;)

Thanks for your advice. They have added a charge to it for late payment but that is not showing online as the arrears figure. I paid what they said was the arrears. I am going to reinstate the direct debit because it is not worth the aggro. Do they always chase after such a short time? 4 days surely isn't that bad??

Aye, it is pretty quick like. It might be because you did not reply to their first contact. I think the banks and the financial industry are all pretty jumpy just now, and might be afraid that everyone will renege on their debts - don't you just feel so sorry for them;)

    Hi magicgirl68

I used to have a MBNA credit card and always found them a bit difficult to deal with!

Does your late payment show as having now been paid on the current statement you have?

If so then you are not in arrears and you should make your next payment in time for the next payment date shown on your statement.

Did they say why they were changing the payment date when you spoke to them?

    Hi Mols

I checked online and the payment I made is showing as being authorised but not off the account yet. I paid what was showing as arrears on the last statement available to view. They have said that to make the account "current" I have to make the next payment now. I wouldn't mind but I have never missed a payment to them before.

They're talking rubbish, you don't have to pay next month's payment to make the account "current", whatever that means! Just make sure that you have paid the late payment charge (which shouldn't be more than £12) and check your statement carefully to ensure that you don't get charged twice for this. If they sneakily change your payment date, they should inform you in writing. They have been known to change the payment date and whack on a late payment charge before you know about it. As long as your account is up to date and the arrears and late payment charge have been paid, you don't owe them another payment until 18th August. Just ignore the phone calls and as another poster said, if you have anything else to say to them, send them a letter, recorded delivery if possible, so they can't deny receiving it.
