Network like crazy. Remember that the majority of jobs (I was told, but cannot remember source or figure....!) are not advertised. If I looka t my own chequered career, over half my jobs have been through asking, through speculative letters, cvs, and through other people asking me because I had put word out. Remember that people know people know people, so some very unlikely connections come up. Circumventing the traditional recruitment process means people get to know you, first, not the stuff on the application form.
Remember when you apply you might want to consider not putting your convictions on the application form. In the box for it, write "see enclosed envelope" and put an envelope in marked "private and confidential - human resources" then go into as much detail as you need in that. The reason being, if you go to interview, the application form is photocopied and handed round all the interviewers. If you get to interview stage then you meet the criteria so your offence is none of their business. I understand if you feel you have nothing to hide - it's the advice we give our lads (I work in a prison) but it is up to you.
Best of luck. Hard work, the slow way, I'm afraid.0 -
