I want to get out of debt

I don't think people will shout at you for that Cath, I certainly won't. I think its reasonable to have small treats, especially if you have a family. It helps to break up the monotony of being in debt and so long as you're sensible, I don't think there's any harm in it.
Good work on that debt too Cath!
Sammypops, I can obviously see your point about having a stranger in the house, but you are the one that will vet them and there's no reason why you have to accept one person over another. Perhaps if you are near to a College or Uni, you could take a student on a single-term-only basis to see how it works out. You might feel more comfortable taking a female lodger too. It would certainly bring in some welcome income although I would take some advice about the legal side of things, perhaps the CAB would be able to advise or someone here on the board.
Anyway, I hope you're feeling a little better about your situation and I hope it improves for you soon! Good luckHe huihuinga taangata he pukenga whakaaro – A meeting of people; a wellspring of ideas (Maori proverb)0 -

go for the older ones, ie mid twenties, especially the orientals, they are always going oout/away on trips.....

We had foreign language students three years running a few years ago, for two weeks each. Nothing bad to say about them, all were polite, pleasant and friendly. Youngest was 11, eldest 17. Ours were all French. Definately worth thinking about. He huihuinga taangata he pukenga whakaaro – A meeting of people; a wellspring of ideas (Maori proverb)0

Contact your Mortgage Co and instead of requesting a payment holiday, ask if you can just pay the interest on your Mortgage for 6 months, that way you are not actually incurring more debt. Your Mortgage Co is more likely to agree to such an arrangement as they are still receiving their profit out of you. Then use the Capital towards your CC debt.
As for taking in lodgers - it can be a bit dicey - your home is never really your own. You have enough stress at present and anyway although you may not be liable for tax - it can effect your WFC and Council Tax - as although it may not be a taxable income - it is still income and you will lose your single occupancy benefit too.
Finally Car Boot anything and everything - I was amazed - got £300 one rainy Friday.0 -
Is there anyone at all that could lend you the money to clear one of the cards at least, you would be able to pay them back with the same amount of money each month that you are paying the credit card back and it would reduce the bill quicker as there would be no interest going on top, or pay them back every month but say £20 less than your minimum payment and put that £20 on to the money you are already paying on another card, so you would have cleared one card interest free due to loan and reduce the other bill more quickly and cut the interest as well. I know its not nice to owe a friend or relative but it could help.0

This is my first post! but i can totally understand about being in debt, I am still living with my mum and had a full time, well paid job and I still managed to run up those credit cards until I could no longer cope with it, I felt really down knowing how much money I owed and knowing that I would have to be strict with myself if I was start to pay it back. What was most irritating was that it didn't take much time or effort to get into debt but getting out of it was such a struggle. Anyway, to help pay back my debt I started up doing catalogue distribution, network marketing and party plan with my partner (yes that sounds a lot but its for the one company and when it got going it was no trouble really). Its just sticking with it but the fact that there's a guy in the business (who we're quite good friends with) on roughly £4000 a month and he has been doing it for only 6 years made it worthwhile (and yes that is a month NOT a year!). I started it roughly 6 months ago and am now earning just under £350 a month, which isn't bad to say it had to fit around other commitments (like another job) and it certainely helps pay off those credit cards!! :j
If anyone needs any more info then please just ask.
