Spray tanning advice for a newbie please....

Got to get rid of my white strap marks as I am wearing a halter dress in a few weeks.

So, how do these spray tans work? How long do they last for? What should I do before I go? How many clothes will I be able to leave on.

I've never had one before but I've been bearing my shoulders and nothing is making any difference. I have red hair so am white although my chest where the sun hits is brown, as are my arms.

If I have a spray tan will the browner bits get darker and so I still have strap marks? or what? Please tell me how it works.

  • OK, I carry out hundreds of spray tans every month, and even more creme ones.
In my opinion you would be better off with a creme one as it's mostly more accurate, and the therapist can apply it just to the areas you want. If you have a spray one you will be expected to exfoliate your skin before your appointment. Wear loose, dark clothes, as few as possible. Leave it on for 6 - 8 hours to cure (unless it's an Aviva Labs express tan), use only warm water to wash off the guide colour and make sure you moisturise ONLY with the recommended product every day. Generally speaking if you use Dove products it will strip your tan.

Re how much clothing you should remove. I ask my clients to wear disposable undies (provided by me) and be naked otherwise. This way I'm not distracted by clothing, and you run less of a risk of strap marks. There are those modest individuals who prefer not to be naked and I respect their wishes, having informed them of the risks of smudging, etc.
A creme applied tan will last 7 - 10 days with proper aftercare. A spray one around 5 days - again with proper aftercare.

Perfect thanks for posting that. I will pop to a salon and see what they can do for me, I a going to a wedding mid August and thought I might be able to have it done the weekend before but I don't think so. I've never had one before so your advice was greatly appreciated.
  • Pleasure! Make sure you have a trial first. There are certain tans that can make a Caucasian skin go orange!
