'Defauted Account' on credit report

Hi All
I am new and was hoping you may help me clear afew things up.
Over the past 6 months I have found it impossible to get a credit card, so this morning I paid to get a copy of my credit report. On my report it shows 'Defaulted account' against a mobile phone contract I had back in 2006. Admittedly I was late making payments and it was eventually passed to a debt collection company to which I then paid them the full balance that was outstanding. My question is it seems this 'Defaulted account' on my report is causing my credit score to be very poor as it is the only negative thing on there. But should it be 'defaulted'? As I have paid the debt? Could I get them to remove this?
Thank you in advance.

you cannot get the default taken off as you admit you ignored the debt/missed payments so it rightly does belong on your credit file, but you can ask the company to show it as "satisfied"
We are going througha similar thing where the OH had a default wcked on his file, but we never sent a single bill - British Gas.
Anyway, I think I'll stop hijacking the BR forum
