cheap racing /road bicycle

I am looking for a cheap road/racing bicycle

halfords do a cheap £299 by cheap i mean its not a very good bike.
for that kind of money for a extra 350 you can get a claud butler

£300 is kinda out of my price range/ budget. I saw a nice old Italian one for sale for £25 on gumtree but i missed it it sold as soon as they put the ad up.

i got my heart set on getting one. I had one as a child and iv got in to cycling in a big way for fitness and my mounting bike is ok but i wanted something more road like for taking out on the road.

If i had a £350 bike i would worry in case it would get stolen bicycles like that are a target for thieves i believe.
