Can I get it repaired for free?

Hi All,
I was hoping some of you guys could offer me some advice on a warranty issue. I bought an expensive piece of recording equipment about 5 months ago that cost me £800, it's since developed a fault and I'd like to go in knowing my rights before I approach the company.
Unfortunately, after buying the equipment, I find that it's only got a 3 month manufacturers warranty which to me seems a joke for something this expensive. I wouldn't mind having it repaired but I don't agree that I should have to pay for it, after all it wasn't cheap and 5 months in my eyes is not a reasonable amount of time for it to last.
So what can I expect from the shop, should they agree to repair it free of charge? Am I entitled to a refund?
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Ignore this post, everyone.
I've just spoken to the shop and despite the product manual saying it's only guaranteed for 3 months, the shop says it's 12 months.
Happy days
