Look for an IFA that specialises in pensions. Ask what qualifications they have.

With personal pension transfers no additional qualifications are required. Although I would agree that looking at an IFA with pension specialisation is a good idea. Transfers are a different beast to regular contributions and an IFA doing a lot of business in that area will know the good companies and the bad ones from an admin point of view in addition to the published terms and conditions. They would also know about the lesser known features that some providers have but dont heavily advertise.
I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. They are not financial advice and you should not treat them as such. If you feel an area discussed may be relevant to you, then please seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser local to you.

Here is a little article from moneymarketing this week:
80 per cent of the 442 UK equity and fixed interest funds that were launched before the FTSE 100’s peak have out-performed it since. Of the 442 funds 48 per cent out-performed the index by more than 50 per cent.

This just goes to show that at times, managed funds are better than trackers and vice versa. This just supports the view that you dont put all your eggs into one basket. Invest some in trackers, invest some in active managed.

  • Thank you again for your tips! (Sorry for the late reply - have been having computer trouble!).

I will see an IFA (or two) as well as reading about the subject as much as possible!!!!!!!

    Thanks again

No it doesn't. It just shows that the managed funds that underperformed have been closed down (and possibly relaunched) because they were failing to attract sufficient investment to keep them viable.

    Lies, damned lies and statistics.

It's a difficult to take quotes from 'money marketing' magazine seriously in the same way that it's difficult to take film recommendations from 'empire' magazine seriously.
