are banks allowed to take cash without asking?

I missed a payment off my halifax credit card which is now overdue byabout 3 weeks. I told the bank that I was having problems repaying debt and am in the process of selling my house so they would be repaid in full in 4-6 weeks . They refused to discuss it and took the missed payment from my halifax current account without asking or informing me and sneakily put it down as "cash" on my online statement instead of "halifax cc payment" as usual. Is this even legal or can I ask that they repay the money? I have obtained my credit reference file which, ironically, is still good with no missed or late payments on it for anything.
Any help would be very welcome.

You'll probably find if you read the terms and conditions of your account(s) that they do have right to take payments from your current account.
Anyone on the site who is on a DMP for example, is advised to open up a new bank account asap with a bank to which they don't owe any money. That way you have contol over any money that you do have.
I'd suggest that if you are in anyway likely to have problems in the future, open an account with another bank.0 -
chunky they have every right to do it, to the amazment of people when it happens  if you read your terms and conditions it is usually in there, i am sorry to say you will not see that money again
do as #2 says get a new bank account with a company you have no financial dealings with

Oh no!!!! I have a business account with the abbey (I think this is MBNA) and i have a Virgin card (also MBNA) I've just gone onto a DMP, although for my personal banking I've opened an account with Natwest (step account)
Can Virgin take money from my business account?
