Cancellation fees

Hope somebody can advise. My partner and I would like to postpone our wedding date for a year but we within our 90 day cancellation period. Our contract says we're liable to pay the full amount for the wedding (I know because I checked with the vendor) but I'm unclear however if this should hold true. Neither I nor my partner have signed any documentation and have merely secured the location via payment to the vendor on our credit cards. Is there any 'out' for us to not have to pay the full whack (which is substancial) for a basic wedding. I say basic there vecause we haven't fleshed out any detail with the vendor regarding any of the detail for the 'big day'.
I fully accept having to lose the deposit but we really do have good reason to want to move the date (personal reasons obviously).
Thanks
PS. I don't have wedding insurance before you ask.

Have you told the venue that you just want to move the date? They may not charge you anything for that, it also depends how far you are from the original date, if they can fill it, they may not charge you full whack.0

Have told them, they're just going by the book though and haven't offered any help as yet citing that they might not be able to get another booking for the original date (just over 2 months). Effectively i'd be charged in full for the cancellation and then have to rebook!!0

To be fair, deciding to postpone it two months before it's due to happen is always going to lose you money. No chance you could still go ahead but on a smaller scale?0 -
I know what you mean tamarto but honestly I wouldn't be posting here if the reason for needing to postpone didn't outweigh being able to hold it on the day.
Seeing as I am where I am with this i'm more focusing on the vendor not having had anything signed by us and still requesting the full payment.0 -

But by your own admission you knew the terms! I can't see you getting very far tbh0 -
Did you get a copy of the Terms and Conditions when you paid the deposit?
I believe that handing over the money and having a verbal contract, which is arguably the same as a written contract, is proof of you accepting the T&C's.
Short of the venue being flexible and finding someone else to fill the date, i dont think theres much you can do.
You could try contacting your credit card company. What matters most is how well you walk through the fire0 -
Hmm seems like i need some legal advice.
I hear what you're saying but I'm looking for something concrete either way. As the saying goes "Verbal contract, not worth the paper it's written on". Just saying it could be argued both ways.
Anyways i'm not looking to get into an argument with the vendor, was just hoping to get advice on here from anyone reading who might know better how contracts work.0
