Family History/Genealogy Software

Hi, I started researching my family history a while ago and I've built up a good collection of documents, photos etc some of which I have added to my trees on Ancestry but I would now like to move away from having everything on Ancestry as I don't want to have to keep paying the fees every month.

Can anyone recommend a good software programme (nothing too complicated!) I would like a programme where I can "easily" transfer all my information from ancestry including census images etc if that's possible?

you can try genes reunited, you can download a GEDCOM of your tree from ancestry to export.

family tree maker 10 includes an ancestry subscription, so you get one of the best bit of software and access, they also link to make life easier.

    there are several freebies too.

Hi Kestrel, check with your local library re Ancestry as many have subscriptions to the basic service which can then be used for free providing you are willing to travel to library to use their computers.

HI OP, I am in a similar situation. My subscription to Ancestry ends soon and I can't afford to renew, plus I am not finding it so useful anymore anyway.
My question is, do I need to transfer all my tree info (records, stories, images) before my subscription runs out - to avoid losing access to what I have already found?
I am reseaching scottish records and am now finding ancestry is rather limited on this as you get further back. Anyone know of other good sites? I do use Scotlands People, which is great for finding records but while more accurate the costs add up and I still need a way of storing my tree. What do other scottish family tree researchers reccommend?

    thanks
