Am I entitled to anything?

Options
Hi all,
I read that if you earn less that £5225, then you don't have to pay any tax.
Last year I had a job from September-November. I got paid less than £1000 and got taxed around ~£200, each month
Someone told me to get my p45 another form, fill it out and send it off.
I asked the employer for my p45 she said she would send it. 2months later I hadn't heard anything, so I emailed her and she said she sent it off ages ago :(
She didn't really like me, ever...

So i earned less than £5225 in tax year 2008-2009, am I entitled to claim anything back? why didn't i get a p60 also?

Thanks if anyone can help :)

The tax paying threshold for 2008-2009 was 6035 UKP.

So if you earnt less than that from all sources, (employments, social security benefits, any other sources of income, ) then you will be entitled to a tax refund.

You only get a P60 from a company you are employed by on the 5th April of the tax year concerned, if you finished in November then you won't get a P60, only a P45

You say you got paid less than a £1000.00 I presume that this is the amount each month, as you refer to being taxed £200.00 per month

You post seems to have been stuck for over a year, as you refer to 2008 as last year, so the easiest thing to do is call you local office and see if they have all the information on their systems, in which case they can refer it to the repayment office, if they are missing any info you need to send it into the office they tell you.

If your job was from Sept-Nov 2009 you would be talking about the 2009/2010 tax year - an important point to remember when approaching HMRC re any refund.

It sounds like when you started the job you didn't give your employer a P45 from previous employment or ask to sign a P46 - is this correct?

Check the payslips you received and come back here and let us know what tax code they put you on. Can't tell from your rough figures but sounds like it might have been BR.

If you had no other employment during the tax year then in all likelihood you are due a refund.

Your ex-employer doesn't have to issue you with a P60 as you weren't employed by them at the end of the tax year. If they say they sent you the P45 and it got lost in the post then the best thing is to write to the tax office with copies of your payslips, explaining that your P45 has been lost in the post and that this was your only income for the year and you believe you have overpaid tax.

Next step, sit tight it can take a while a couple of months or more to hear anything back from the tax office.

    Hi,
I was put on tax code 647LM1
I've only got 2 out of 3 payslips because I left by the time November's one was given out to everyone.
That was the only employment I had that year as I was doing my a-levels till June then started working in September
Do you reckon I should just give them a call, or write a letter?
    I'm clueless about these things!

    Cheers for the reply! :)

EDIT: And you're correct, I didn't have a p45 to give as I never had a job before (this was my first job) and she didn't make me sign a p46 either.

After you left what were you doing ? from the period of you leaving until Aprill 5th 2010

you said you only had one job, but were you claiming JSA or any other social security benefits?

From November till about May I was out of work looking for work not on any benefits, living off the money I'd earnt
Now I'm on Jobseeker's Allowance, since around end of May

EDIT: I've been on JSA since May (the last sentence sounded weird)

If you didn't claim any JSA before April 5 th of this year, And this was your only employment for the last financial year.

The quickest way to claim is phone HMRC on tuesday, (monday is always horrendously busy) see if they have the details of your employer on record, if they do, then they can refer it to the repayment team, it will still take about 5 weeks for them to refund you, but its quicker than posting anything into them.
