My local Homebase has several Brita filters and cartridges in their reduced section, might be worth checking out where you are? I have a Brita, even though we are in a soft water area, and wouldn't be without it.

It might be worth checking Argos website too , to see if they have any offers. We got the cylinder-shaped glass filter jug for under a tenner as it was one of their offers and it looks really classy and being glass, won't start to discolour like oour old plastic one started to do (tho" to be fair, it was pretty old). MY partner usually buys the cartridges....ours takes those big big maxtra cartridges and he says they are usually a bit cheaper at Argos too. When we had the ordinary Brita plastic jug, we sometimes used to use the Boots ownbrand cartridges & they fitted & seemed fine.

They are good, because they take some of the bad flavour and sediment out of the tap water. Here the tap water tastes like rat droppings and has a deposit at the bottom of the glass like it were Andrews. If you get one of the oval shaped filters it will fit in the door of the fridge, so you have a glass of iced water to have with your coffee.

I'm not sure about the cheapo filters. Someone did tell me that they are recycled, but I can't confirm that.

I too use a filter jug, until recently I used the old style Brita filters and they worked just fine. When I went to buy more there was a bulk buy offer in Argos which made the filters much cheaper and so I bought one of the new Maxtra jugs from there. TBH there's no noticable difference between the two. But in the past I've used "universal" filters and found they didn't last as long, in only a couple of weeks the water tasted bad again, so I wouldn't buy them again.
If you do choose a "non Brita" type jug just make sure that you will be able to buy refills easily as sometimes shops discontinue them and then you're stuck.

    It's only a game

Just a note, you can get the Brita filters from Amazon in 9 & 12 packs, and they are usually quite a bit cheaper than buying singles or 3 packs from most other places. We have a slender Brita jug and also our kettle uses a Brita (Maxtra - oval) filter.

At least worth a look :D

I don't know what you are supposed to do but I refill mine when its about half full. Are there no instructions? That's a good question, actually, made me think :)

I'm pretty sure you have to keep the cartridge wet - if the cartridge is not in contact with water for half an hour, then (at least with the old style), the process of soaking etc, needs to be started again.
