How to gather Honeymoon donations

Hello all

I'm trying to get to the bottom of how to gather honeymoon donations online for our wedding.

I was going to use a PayPal donations button, but they have told me on the phone I'm not eligible to use it. I can't find any legal info on who is or isn't eligible and the phone support is useless.

I wondered if any of you bright sparks would have a clue?? Is there an easier way?

Jon

    Hi Jon,

There are lots of sites where you can set up a 'honeymoon gift list'. You set upbyour own list with for example flights, excursions, spa treatments etc that your friends and family can buy for you. I think it is a nice way of making people feel like they have 'bought' you something as some people are funny about giving money. When people contribute to the list I believe the money then goes into your bank account. Try googling honeymoon gift list and see what you come up with. Hope that helps :)

I think Hayes and Jarvis do gift donations via their website.

I wouldn't have thought it would be illegal for paypal not to let you use a donations button
There are quite a few lists on here, the only one I know of is honeymoney or you could ask for vouchers for a particular travel company

i have been wondering what to do in this department- we would like honeymoon vouchers because we are not going to need anything for the house- but how does it work- we will have booked for and paid for our honeymoon as we are going the monday after the wedding.
so do you ask for holiday vouchers and pay for another holiday with them?

After reading this thread I was busy online last night!! It seems that if you set up one of these accounts eg with honeymoney the money is paid directly to you anyway. The company aren't travel agents and do no booking. You list in what you want the money to go towards, people go online/phone to donate and the firm gives you the money.
I also looked at trailfinders who I've heard nothing but good things about, and my friend used them for her honeymoon. You still pay for your honeymood by the required time, less any donations already received, but the account is kept open and any gifts paid in up to (or just after!) the wedding get credited back to whatever you paid with
You could do vouchers but then you're tied to a particular travel agent or company

you have to have a premier account with paypal to get the button, you can set up a simple site yourself at yola.com and then add whatever items you want... i mocked one up to show my other half quickly but ive just looked and i must have deletd it! it had paypal buttons though and the site does it all for you.

I listed in seperate tags flights, night 1, night 2 etc and activities then people can pick what they want to contribute towards and you just get the money. I thought it was more personal than just telling guests its for your honeymoon :)

    Hi

I think the reason they wont give you a "donation" button, it that it is used for charities, and you arent a charity!

We're using https://www.whattogive.com for our honeymoon gift list.

You can create a list of things, such as trips, a nights hotel, transport etc. That way your guests feel like they are buying you something specific rather than just giving you some cash. We think its great as it solves the problem of people who may take offence to being asked for cash rather than gifts and means you can say "thankyou for paying for so-and-so, we had a great time" or something along those lines.

You can set up Paypal to it, so they select their gift and pay immediately with it, or they can promise the gift (so its not available to anyone else anymore) and give you the money some other way, such as by cash or cheque in a card.

You need to be aware that if they use paypal to pay for your gifts, then it is only free if they transfer "send money" using a linked bank account or their paypal balance. If they use plastic there is a charge of 3.4% plus 20p. You'll need to make this clear when you let people know about your "gift list" or you could get some unhappy people when they get charged the fee.
