CRB disclosure - juvinille conviction??

Help!!! I have just been offered the position of a trainee paramdic and have to do an enhanced CRB check. On the form it asks if i have any convictions/cautions/warnings. When i was 14 i was arrested for shoplifting and think i received a caution although i couldnt be sure. I have had CRB checks done before but not enhanced ones and i dont think this has shown up previuosly. Do i need to declare this or not bearing in mind its a juvinille conviction??? and if i do will it go against me?? and if i dont and it shows up will it go against me???

thanks, martin.

I can assure you this wont show up, you dont need to declare it as its spent under the rehabilitation of offenders act.

I had a caution at that age two and have been enhanced crb'd over the last few years and never did it show up:)

I wouldn't bank on it not showing up - my friend's son recently (this year) went for an NHS junior position and he was in a similar position - had a caution for shoplifting while a teenager - he didn't declare it but HR came back to him saying it had come up on the CRB. He explained to them that it wasn't a deliberate lie on his part, he genuinely thought it was "spent" and had all been a silly mistake as a teenager. They accepted his explanation and he got the job! I would say best policy would be to disclose this and explain the situation - you're more likely to be in trouble for not telling the truth if they later find out. Best of luck with the job!

I agree with the last post. Always best to disclose no matter how old a issue may be. In my mind it also shows that a person is open and honest.

Good luck with the job, l applaud you for wishing to help people.
  • thanks for all your advice. i today rang the employer and explained to her. she really didnt give much away but that i had done the right thing declaring it now rather than if it does show up and i didnt tell them. i am still in 2 minds though as to tick the 'yes' or 'no' box when its asks if i have ever received a caution. i have had basic CRB done before and nothing has shown up and not sure if the police did actually record it as a caution or just went through the formalities to scare me!! i mean does a childhood caution really stay on your record for 16 years???? and am i doing the right thing owning up to something which might not even show, potentionally making things worse.

just so annoying that i now have to torture myself waiting for my CRB to come back which could take weeks!! in the mean time i am leaving my job at the end of this week, have bought a car (after giving up a company car) and also turned down a great job in construction, when all this could all now come to nothing!!

    Hi!

I have enhanced disclosure. Because I have no cautions or convictions, I'm not sure as to whether or not your caution would show up, but I would declare it anyway.

It is highly unlikely that shoplifting at 14 would scupper your chances of working as a paramedic, and the consequences of not telling; but having the caution show up anyway; would probably be greater than telling, but not having the caution show up.

A teacher friend of mine was cautioned for a minor benefit fraud offence 20 years ago, and this shows up on her E.D. CRB check. However, this was an adult caution, rather than child or juvenile.

I also know a senior social worker who has served time in prison for what most people would probably consider a little worse than a mild offence! But because it was many moons ago and was not sexual or violent in nature, it's never held her back. Despite this conviction being several decades old, it still shows up on E.D.

My understanding is that E.D. brings up all criminal history; spent or unspent.

It should have shown up on any CRB check, even a standard one. But I would suggest you stop worrying. Having a conviction or a caution, especially one that long ago, does not in any way mean that you won't be considered suitable. If it hasn't shown up and still doesn't then that is an error in the information (not unheard of). You have admitted it is there, and done the right thing, so if it does now show up then you haven't held anything back. But really - don't worry. You and half the rest of the population (literally in the case of men, and women are ctaching up) did something daft when you were young. There'd be nobody in work if employers threw out good candidates over youthful stupidity.
