Can defaults be removed from your credit report before the full six years has passed?

  • For the record, I feel my 2 of my defaults were added in error (the fight to sort this is very long, however, as the 2 credit card companies involved are being very pig-headed over it!) the 3rd was added 2 years after the offence, which is NOT an accurate reflection of my account!

I shall be posting on my plights further down the line, if anyone's interested. It's sad to think that one mistake from eg 2 years ago can have an effect for another 4 years, when circumstances can be very much changed since the original offence.

It's even sadder that it is so hard to fight for justice when you are wronged by a large company. Good luck all posters on here, whether fighting the defaults or not!

I've actually contacted Lowell Portfolio today, asking them nicely to remove a default for £125, which I paid in full the following month. It was back in 2006, so maybe they'll consider it. I'm not holding out much hope, mind you, but I'll let you know what they say in their reply.

I also got in touch with Aktiv Capital via email today, requesting that they remove another default from my credit record which I believed was on there in error. They wrote to me two years back, claiming I had a debt with a catalogue. I didn't, and ended up getting their fraud department involved, as I believed someone else had applied in my name. Of course, neither they nor the catalogue had any kind of paperwork whatsoever, and in the end they accepted that the debt was unenforceable.

I got my credit report today, only to discover a default on there from them. I thought I'd try emailing them to see what they said. Within ten minutes I got an email telling me my request was being passed to another department. About half an hour later I had another email from their Customer Services Team Leader, confirming the data would be removed from my file within 72 hours. I was amazed it was so easy.

Of course, whether it'll come off within 72 hours or not is another matter, but I'll be keeping a close eye.

Im sure I read somewhere about things changing, something to do with eu rules but in simple terms they would only show for 3 years.
Sure it was on this site somewhere and it was a reliable poster.

However take this as a rumour at present.

that would be great if that were the case. I have a default on my credit file due to me not being able to afford my egg loan back in 2008. they've made it interest free until I have paid it off, ideally what I wish to do is to pay more towards when i have the facility to do so and then preferably have the default removed once i've paid it in whole rather than wait until 2014!
  • Hi Baz@rr, good luck with Lowells! Aktiv Kapital have been very naughty there so you'd hope they would take swift action, or they could be in for a heavy pay-out for compensation if you were to take it further!

Hello BCJ, let's hope that this new rule is more than a rumour, eh? I shall certainly be keeping my eyes peeled!

my niece and nephew are in a similar situation to you. They have learned their lesson re how to conduct their finances, but cannot get a morgage for at least another 2 years.

We found a way around it by getting a Buy to Let mortgage. My niece has a good credit record, so she and my OH are joint applicants for the BTL mortgage. We trust them to make all the payments, fees etc and are happy to lend our good credit rating to help them get on the mortgage ladder. There is no financial cost to us. This was arranged via a mortgage advisor.

    Hope this helps.......
